How did the "tactical genius hurr" meme start?
Creed has a special rule, Tactical Genius, that can give any unit (it doesn't specify) the Scout or Infiltrate special rule (I forget which).
What this means is, any unit can arrive on any side of the board if Creed makes his reserve roll. The Meme comes in when every army should clearly be able to see such a massive unit (like a Scout Titan) approaching, but it still pops out from behind a lamppost and kicks the other team Seven shades of Sunday.
How did the "tactical genius hurr" meme start?
Creed in the tabletop has a special rule that allow him to grant the scout special rule to ANY unit.
The scout rule means that the unit starts the game undeployed but when the time comes for them to be deployed you roll a d6.
1-2 means they ender from anywhere on the left die of the board, 3-4 means the right, 5-6 means you can CHOOSE what side of the board they come from.
Normally this applied to scouting units such as space marine scouts, sentinals ect...
But with Creed as a commander in your army this may be granted to ANY unit. Space marines, Terminators, Baneblades, Titans... if you can field it you can use Creeds rule on it.
This lead to /TG/ and various other "chans" making jokes about how Creed was a "tactical genius" and he could hide any unit in any given environment. The jokes where things like titans hiding in swimming pools or Baneblades jumping out from behind lamp-posts.
several comics sprung up around this where some enemies (usually chaos warmasters) would be caught off guard by a Titan from nowhere and the comics would normally end with. "WHAT!!! that impossible! Only a Tactical Genius could...... CREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!"
My personal favourite had to be one where it's just creed left standing on the battlefield. The armies of chaos stand before him, the chaos lord says something about the mighty Creed falling. Creed then says "I always have an Emperor up my sleeve" (The Imperial Tarot card in case you are wondering)
He then holds the card up and when he put it back in his pocket, on the hill in the background the card was obscuring stands a squadron of titans.
Try as I might I have never found it again.

I thought it was clear he was talking about USMC, not Marines.
I'd say excepting Cadians and DKoK, they're actually pretty close as an analogy can get, without taking leave into account. Their weapons are lowest bidder and re-purposed gear originally designed for other things.
So most other regiments use better weapons than the DKoK and Cadian regiments?

So, how do figures work? Like, on Fire Warriors there is this optional thing I can put on. I assumed they're ammo packs but they could be grenades or something else. Do those actually count if I give them to all my soldiers?
I'm not really building an army yet. I'm just collecting a few sets of Tau stuff, painting and building it until my friends jump on the wagon.
Right now this is kind of how I'm making my Tau
Fire Warriors with Pulse Rifles - 3 Infantry and 1 Squad Leader make a Squad.
Two of the Squads make an Overwatch unit which is essentially a semi-stationary firing line.
3 Pulse Carbines and a Squad Leader make a Mobile Infantry unit which advance under pulse rifle cover.
That's all I've got really.

If you have the codex, I'd recommend reading that to make your decisions. In fact, it's the first thing you should do. If you don't have a codex, you can always go to some place like scribd, and read it there.
[editline]12th October 2011[/editline]
I'll go ahead and grab my codex, and look through it to make some recommendations. I haven't actually played Tau, but I've played enough 40k to know what's a good idea, and what's not.
[editline]12th October 2011[/editline]
Okay. I have looked in my codex. Fire Warrior teams consist of 6-12 Fire Warriors. So if I were you, I'd give them all pulse rifles, although if you really want pulse carbines, then you could split the squad up into 2 six man fireteams, one armed entirely with pulse rifles, and the other with pulse carbines. I would not recommend that though. Pulse Carbines are Assault 1 weapons, and they will only get 1 shot. However, pulse rifles are rapid fire, and can get 1 shot at 30" or 2 shots at 15". If you move with them, you get 2 shots at 15", and cannot assault. With assault weapons, you move, shoot, and assault. However, with Tau, you don't want to do that, because they suck at close combat. Keep them far off, and have them blast stuff.
[editline]12th October 2011[/editline]
Oh, and pulse carbine only shoots 18".
Ah, alright. Thanks for the tips. I just read someone on another forum doing something like that but I wasn't sure. I just wanted to paint and put some Carbines into the hands of a couple of Fire Warriors.
I was kind of waiting though. Because aren't the Tau getting a new codex along with Necrons, except GW isn't saying anything about it? So I thought I'd just get the new one.
Pic related.

So my books from The Black Library arrived yesterday. I'm thoroughly enjoying them so far.
What i'd love to do is hunt down a 40k scale UH-1 Huey model, Konvert it all orky and shit, have some Boyz with big shootaz and vietnam helmets dangling out the sides, And tuns of dakka, and class it as one of those Chinorks or a Deffkopta.

As it stands, GW is not working on a new Tau codex yet. And if they are, it's not going to be released for a while. The Tau Codex is still on their website.
Although there's no longer a Witch Hunters/SoB codex for sale on the GW website, and the new one got released in White Dwarf, though there's still the old Witch Hunters codex lurking around the GW site as a PDF as well.
Annoying, to be honest. Always been tempted to start a SoB army simply because I've never seen anyone use 'em, and I also like the idea of zealous pyromaniac armoured battle nuns.
I could never start a SoB Army because they're all metal and online-order only. Metal models are HERESY.
Oh Throne, the Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting primer is quite funny! :v:

(Note: losing your weapon or allowing it to malfunction is punishable by two months of starvation diet and hard labour, or death"
"Note: Battlefield conditions can sometimes interrupt communications. If this happens do not panic! If in doubt, move forward."

Especially the Vacuum Protocol. Oh and of course when they state that orks are weak and their teeth come out at the root with a tug.

To be fair though, if you're in a situation where you're close to an Ork's mouth and you aren't fifty different kinds of fucked up, you're probably strong enough to pull them out.
One of these days I plan on basing my models. Is it harder to do with the models already on there or does it not really matter?
I know it's been a long time since this post, but yes, it will be harder depending on how you want to base them. If you're just gonna stick some static grass or w/e on the base yeah, it's as easy as brushing the base with glue and then dipping the model in the box of grass. If you're doing sand you have to paint it though, and thus you gotta awkwardly paint around the legs and feet. All mistakes can obviously be fixed, but it's better to paint the body and base separately and superglue them together when they're done.
Also hey new Tau player, glue the legs to the torso of your fire warriors first, paint those, then glue the helmet and paint that, then glue the arms (check the weapon posing, too!) and finally the weapon.
As I've stated, as of current fluff, Nids own the eventual-long-term logistical game, even over Necrons.

Yeah, definately. Before buying stuff I'd always use 'proxy' models to see if I liked using it on the tabletop. It's still fun, but it does lack a certain something that using the actual models brings.
There's an issue of line of sight which matters a lot if using ruins or hilly terrain. You can't gauge it with a piece of paper.

Good god you're a massive Tyranid fanboy. There's no proof that they've devoured even one galaxy, or that there's some super-mega-massive hive fleets still on the way. They're extragalactic, that's all. For all we know they could already be starving because of the long, long journey between galaxies and are desperate to gain sustenance.
The Land Raider is a variant of a tractor apparently while Terminator armor is heavy-duty work armor modified for combat.
In Fifteen Hours the Guard boot camp was a couple months long. While they do also train during the space travel, they don't really have any more experience than a modern marine, and most of that training goes to waste when they have massive casualties planetside. Very few survive to the end of their service, and no one ever returns to their home planet.
b)substantially better gear to levels it's not even funny
The equipment of a standard infantryman is very good, I agree, but overall the whole IG organization has shit for technology. Their tanks are crap, their weapons have laughable range, and the air power is practically useless.
c)are probably somewhat genetically evolved compared to today's humans
Also devolved. They come from so many different worlds evolution is not really any advantange here.
d)are definitely not stupid (with the exception of a few regiments, which keep marching no matter what)
"Throw guardsmen at it" is still a very common tactic, and will probably never be outphased due to the rigid unchanging behavior of the Imperium as a whole.

http://bloodofkittens.com/blog/2011/10/12/network-news-the-necron-rumor-you-need-to-know-and-more/
Rumor has it that a new Necron shooting attack can cause large swaths of your opponent’s army to die in a new interesting way. How it works is simple…
Necron Shoots Unit
Necron Hits Unit
Necron player allocates where the wound will be (how this is worded I have no idea)
All identical models to the one just shot are now hit
Roll to wound all models that are identical
Make armor saves were applicable
Here is an example. I shoot Necron weapon at a squad of Long Fangs. I hit and chose my wound to be rolled on a Missile Launcher Long Fang. All Missile Launcher Long Fangs IN THE ENTIRE ARMY are now hit. Now think take this a step further. What if I shoot a Ork Boy?
Here is the other way this weapon could work.
Necron Shoots Unit
Necron Hits Unit
Even though I only hit once I roll to wound every model in that unit.
Opponent makes armor saves where applicable
Now this doesn’t sound as scary as the first example, but it is basically GK Cleansing Fire power for Necrons. This version also fits in with chatter about multiple weapons that deal with horde armies
