Wasn't the Baneblade the original main battle tank during the DAoT?
Probably, I'm not sure. But I think its safe to say that all Imperial technology we see today is re-purposed manufactured and designed into a Imperial liking, I can't imagine older technology was as Gothic and boxed looking, especially when we look at Rogue Trader Imperial robots. Essentially we are looking at a bunch of half written STC's that have been devolved to work in a easy to understand design and this is because the Iron Men built all of mankind's technology and only they knew how it worked. When the Iron Men were killed off the knowledge of how it was built and maintained was forgotten and the part of the Adeptus Mechanicus who did know how to reverse engineer its technology went renegade and sided with Horus, the remaining adeptus were rather clueless about the technology at the time and reverse engineering is now heretical.
In Fifteen Hours the Guard boot camp was a couple months long. While they do also train during the space travel, they don't really have any more experience than a modern marine, and most of that training goes to waste when they have massive casualties planetside. Very few survive to the end of their service, and no one ever returns to their home planet.
From what I recall though that is your average army training, if not longer. There are references all over books about retired guardsmen.
IG organization has shit for technology. Their tanks are crap, their weapons have laughable range, and the air power is practically useless.
Imperial Guard technology blows our current tech out of the water, no matter how crude it appears. As I said earlier their basic lasgun could blow off a limb if put on a high setting and on normal they can punch through a wall.
"Throw guardsmen at it" is still a very common tactic, and will probably never be outphased due to the rigid unchanging behavior of the Imperium as a whole.
Show me an army that does not do the tactic of "throw infantry at it", that is what infantry is for - get stuck in. Guardsmen are not just thrown at the enemy like a scene in the opening of Enemy at the Gates. There have been a few books I have read where commissars have actually shot officers for wasting human life as such.

Also I don't understand how it can punch through a wall on low but not rip off a limb
That sounds rather backwards
That's because a wall can not stretch and a limb can.
Me and my friend had an interesting conversation today.
The club he goes to just said "fuck it" and everyone has a massive free for all.
First of all, one army(was necrons I think) had 3 of their massive tank units, and he gets one of his units to shoot a rocket at my friend's army.
The rocket misses...
Turns around...
Hits one of his own tanks...
Blows up...
Blows up the other 2 tanks...
And there goes half his army.
He won, by the way. With one spehss mahreen squad left.

"The Leman Russ Battle Tank is a very basic and easily replicable design that stresses strength and versatility while sacrificing comfort and ease of use for efficiency. Some would go so far as to say that it is the most successful tank design in history, and it is safe to say that it is the most numerous battle tank by far in the Imperium. It has little in the way of advanced technology but can operate in any type of terrain and environment. It is also quite slow, but its engine will run on just about anything put in it, allowing it to work for extended periods away from supply depots, although it does have a reduced efficiency with poor fuel. Secondary systems, such as life support and electrical systems run from the internal generator. The tank is very robust with a reinforced cast plasteel hull and turret, likely to withstand most incoming fire, especially on the forward facing armour. The side armour is similarly heavy, but rear armour is much lighter. This allows the engines to move the chassis without overloading, overheating or overstraining. The common Mars Alpha pattern of chassis is used throughout Imperial vehicles but the design, however, is more for performance, not comfort and it is cramped, smelly and noisy within the vehicle."

Everything has a machine spirit. It's actually kind of sad when you think about all the discarded weapons you find in video games.

Do you really have to ask that of a man stupid enough to only wear a loincloth when everyone else has plate and chain?
Here is an example. I shoot Necron weapon at a squad of Long Fangs. I hit and chose my wound to be rolled on a Missile Launcher Long Fang. All Missile Launcher Long Fangs IN THE ENTIRE ARMY are now hit. Now think take this a step further. What if I shoot a Ork Boy?
Now fix up the base.
Dark Millennium's due out March 13th 2013, hopefully that means a load of trailers and such are going to be dumped between now and then.
Now fix up the base.
Like I have anything to do that with, besides painting it brown.

You use a small amount of glue, just enough to stick/melt them together. Not enough so it gushes out everywhere.

Looks quite decent, really, although i think you could get a better greenish paint for his eyes, but that's just my opinion.
Overall, it looks like a good model, so good job.

Its good, all I would recommend is adding water to the paint, then drying it with a tissue until you get it to the point where the paint appears smooth with no cracks when you lay the paint down. I get that problem a lot with white and beige.

No, most IG equip is CONTEXTUALLY equivalent to modern day fighting forces.
