By their equipment and model, generally. If you don't know, you can ask your opponent.
The rules are best learned by playing, I don't understand shit either.

Just played matchmaking in Retribution for the first time in a while, and does it seem to anyone else like the IG are blatantly UP? I mean, twice I fought space marines that were able to trounce me early game by using melee with their [I]tactical marines.[/I] Not to mention the fact that it seems that every AOE attack can destroy an entire squad at the bat of an eyelash.

Sentinel doesn't look that good, in my opinion.

IG are a tricky race, it's not enough to spam Manticores and hope that the enemy will be stupid enough to move into your missiles (not saying that you spam manticores, but eh), it's pretty much a must to get a Chimera as IG, seeing as it reinforces on the field and lets your guardsmen squads easily escape from melee squads/artillery.

You know what's really fun?
Three tactical squads, sergeants, plasma guns.
Techmarine, plasma gun and signum armor.
CSM and SM practically have no counter to that tactic.

Inquisitor looks like shit, so do Ogryns, look at the ogryns from the dkok mod:

Overall, i think i'll skip the DKoK pack, i think i'll just buy the Shas'o Commander dlc instead.
