For that, I cut out little squares of white card, and write down the squad, then glue it to the bottom of the base, and for WHFB, I also note the rank and file number.

I really do hate that modelling is still seen as something that you can only do if you have 'no life.' People who do this have just a legitimate a life as anyone else, some can even claim to have a more worthwhile life because of it, I know I do, painting is the only thing I'm really good at.

Essentially this, I've had the response "You paint models?" in that tone of voice when people come over since I have a lit cabinet in my front room with my IG in one side and my necrons in the other with my White consuls in the middle.
The best response is often when they genuinly look at them then get impressed that I can acctualy paint pretty well, with freehand icons for the consuls etc. and I replaced the glass shelves with boards that match the bases of the models in there. Yes I'm a nerd but that doesn't equal instant no life.
Anyone got any wallpapers to share? 1920x1080 or bigger preferably but 1680x1050 works aswell, Can't find much on wallbase and 4walled.
I have a job and several friends that I hang out with, a girl friend, another hobby but I sometimes like to make models. I don't play with anyone, I just like to spend a couple of hours painting and than gluing them together for the hell of it, listen to music and just focus on something. Good waste of time when I'm bored.

Hah, you must be me, I just bought a big display cabinet for all my random junk, with the top shelf devoted to Models. Fortunately when people look at them, they notice the bigger stuff further down the shelves, and are a bit more forgiving when it comes to the models. I kinda cheated though ,when I started out, I bought a lot of stuff of eBay, like about 30 painted Necrons Warriors, 40 or so Ultramarines, and various other bit's and pieces, so I can disguise my crappier painted stuff with well-painted eBay stuff.

As someone already rather aptly pointed out, affixing clear bases removes the issue without reverting to sperglordism. Painting the model and its base are rather separate issues, but nice job trying to rerail the topic into something not represented by your claim and a much larger and one sided argument paradigm. No points though, you'll have to do a shitload better than that.
