Would you post pics of the commander, please?
Are you even sure she'll like it?
She asked me to paint her a model because she was watching me do it the entire time. So I was like "I'll paint you one of these in pink and white and stick hearts and hello kitty stickers on it for you" and she really liked the idea.
Worst case is she hates it and I just soak it in something and repaint it.
I'll try to get Commander pics later. All the ones I take look terrible. All imperfections are magnified by ten when I try and take a picture. Something can look flawless in person but in the picture I suddenly see where paint is thin and such.
It's just weird that you talk about how complex the damage system is in dow1, yet if I look at all the tech tree stuff in it then I find the same muddy system you talk about. Sure it's true that dow2 is extremly casual but the competitive scene is a lot more present there.
Although I would like to point out that company of heroes must be my favorite rts (even though it doesn't have space marines). It found a fine balance between the two dow games.
To be honest I'd say that Dow DC - with dowpro and without is still played more on a semi competitive level than dow 2.
Honestly not sure about the actual ladder, but as smaller tournaments and similar go. It's nowhere near the rule of SeleCt though anymore.
As the tech tree goes - to be honest tech trees itself are extremely transparent. You know what to expect and when to expect it. At least after you play a few games. The damage system is a whole lot more confusing.
I've met very good players who actually had no clue that Greyknights did massive bonus damage to all deamon armour based units (which includes the krootox for instance) and a slew of other things.
As to Dow 2 and why I know that a giant load of very good players disliked it. Well Dow 2 apart from the absence of the things I mentioned has absolutely giant and massive padding. If you're a semi decent player, it's almost impossible to loose a squad outright and more or less the only economically viable harassing tends to take place around generator farms. Which can be clamped down by a single walker for instance.
Essentially the whole game is massively zoning dependent - while a good strategic player can make a lot of that, in the end it depends a lot less on what you're actually doing as opposed to how you were standing.
Once a fight actually starts you're kinda commited to it and either win or retreat. It's very rare for anyone to be actually able to do a non-retreat retreat.
This coupled with pre-retribution (maybe was patched earlier in the TW update, don't really recall right now) unit AI, which led so many players to tear out their hair, you got a game that the QS Kasyr players hated because it was a whole lot less massive than Dow and which the ladderers and semi pro-players hated because while being smaller, it didn't mean there was more micro involved, but actually far less.
Fucking multiposting
That dog is terrifying.

Shush, I am now a time traveller.
So guys, on sunday I am going to play an 800 pts annihilation match at my local GW store.
Ive got enough models to have either a Space Marine or Ork army, and at the moment Ive been looking at taking this army:
Chapter Master -125 pts base, 165 points with my upgrades
Artificer armour -15 pts
Thunder Hammer -30pts
Melta Bombs-5pts
Tactical Squad - 180 points base,205 pts with upgrades
10 models
Sergeant has Plasma pistol and chainsword -15 pts
Heavy Bolter - free
Plasma gun -10 points
Scout Squad -75 points base, 90 points with upgrades
5 men with Sniper Rifles
Every member has camo cloaks -15 pts
These two are purely to cover the mandatory 2 troops options.
Drop Pod -35 points
Vanguard Veterans - 125 points base, 190 points with upgrades
Sergeant has chainsword and bolt pistol
2 models with power weapon-30 points
2 models have melta bombs-10 points
No jetpacks
They will use the drop pod as a dedicated transport
Devastator Squad- 90 points base, 175 pts with upgrades
2 Las Cannons - 70 pts
1 Heavy Bolter - 15 pts
Sergeant has chainsword (free)
This is just an initial draft coming back from the store, has anyone got any suggestions on what I could replace?

A fine list, but i've got one question, why are you using 2 melta bombs for 2 vanguard veteran models when you already have two las-cannons and a chapter master with melta bombs?

Drop the meltabombs on the Captain, they serve little purpose. The Hb and the LCs in the Devastator squad don't synergies at all.
Only give points costs for the unit as a whole, not their individual options - GW get irritated when people put points costs on things online.
Swap the Tactical sergeant's plasma pistol for a power weapon or fist, put power fists in the vanguard squad instead of meltas. Is the captain going to ride with the Vanguard?
EDIT:
Captain
Artificer armour
Thunder Hammer
[145]
Tactical Squad
10 models
Power Fist
Heavy Bolter
Plasma gun
[215]
Scout Squad
5 men with Sniper Rifles
[75]
Drop Pod
[35]
Vanguard Veterans
Power Weapon
No jetpacks
Power Fist
[165]
795 points.
They will use the drop pod as a dedicated transport
Devastator Squad
2 Las Cannons - 70 pts
[160]
This, perhaps?
What's a good counter to SM in DOW2 mp? Every match I've had is lolrush to level 2 and spam dreadnoughts.

Depends what they're using, suppressing fire will keep them from firing back, if you can flank them they can do very little about the torrent of gunfire and swords now stabbing them in the flank.

As IG:
Stormtroopers with meltaguns, plasma gun Guardsmen, Ogryns.
As Orks:
Nobz, Deff Dread, Sluggaz with Choppa Nob upgrades + a Wartrukk to get them to close in with the enemy,.
As Chaos:
Bloodcrushers, Bloodletters, Mark of Tzeentch/Mark of Khorne Chaos Space Marines.
As Eldar:
Howling Banshees with Banshee Exarch + War Shout, Warp Spiders with Exarches and Haywire Grenades, Guardians with Warlock + Battle Equipment.
As Tyranids:
Warriors/Hormagaunts with Adrenal Glands, personally, i recommend the Warriors, they aren't very good with barbed stranglers but with Adrenal Glands, they tear through power armor and vehicle armor alike.
As Space Marines:
Lascannons, and plasma guns, lots and lots of plasma guns.

I was planning to have the Scouts and Devastators stay back to blast my opponents force apart from afar, then having the tactical squad stay in front and guard them. When my opponent gets a melee mob or heavy weapon platform/tank/squad set up I will drop a Vanguard squad right on him.
I like your list a lot more though, thanks.
Ork hey, ORK!

That happens when you're a chapter that specializes in attack bikes (that are pretty bad).
Bike lists rock what are you smoking
