Okay, a month ago I joined a private tabletop gaming club in my new town, with monthly payment and everything.
I have never been a regular 40K player, but now I'm getting more into 40K because I joined a league in the club where eight contending players will play each other two times each in custom scenarios using 1500 point armies.
Theese guys are amazing.
We play on proper tables, using fully painted 40K themed terrain, nicely and completely painted WYSIWYG armies and we use a system that disallows power- and spam lists - it is basically a wet dream for any fluff oriented tabletop player.
I have now signed up for a mini tournament in three months, and boy the rules are strict. First of all, every single model has to be perfectly WYSIWYG and fully painted. Tournament score wil be rewarded for a great paintjob. We still use the system limiting duplicates of any unit outside of troops, and still limiting even stronger units. We are going to play in two teams of four players. One team is the Imperium (so far: Space Marines, Grey Knights and me as Imperial Guard) and the other is Xenos (Only Necrons so far), each player has a 1600 point army.
Each player has to play three matches, and both a winning team and a winning player is decided.
There is also going to be a fluff quizz also giving you tournament score, so theese guys are thorough!
I have never been to a tournament before in anything, and not played a lot of warhammer. I am a somewhat poor general, but Imperial Guard is quite forgiving so I have managed a 50/50 W/L ratio in the league so far, but do you have any advice for playing a one-day tournament?
Not having the Marine codex, I'd say that looks decent for low points games. Is the Librarian decent in close combat, and are his abilities more offensive in nature, or tuned to supporting allies?
Most of his powers are weak crowd control, but Vortex of Doom can be a risky game winner in my experience. Seeing as how the Librarian isn't an epistolary he will only serve a single purpose.

He's WS 5, his abilities are definietly more offensive in nature, and can only choose two of them and only use one of them each round. I can for an additional cost of 50 pts make him able to do two powers every turn, which can create some pretty cool combinations (like first boosting his Initiative to 10, and then boost strength to 6, and roll 2d6 for armor penetration, or teleport up to 24" and use a Template S 5 AP 3 flame).
you don't really specify how many marines are in each unit.
Flamer in a missile squad is useless, rocket launcher is useless to in small games, you want to keep them mobile so its worth taking a plasma/flamer instead. I think you could do away with super twin linked guy and get a razor back and a few other little bits and pieces like a small scout squad or something.
The idea is to have five-man squads from those Tactical Squads. =)
Take a Heavy Bolter, you've got a lot more anti tank than you need.
If you are playing a small game then tanks really aren't much of a problem. If you are playing objective based games its anti infantry you need. You'll want a CQB squad for pushing enemies off objectives and out of your way.
Alright, perhaps I should use flamer instead of the meltagun then instead?

Is getting Epistolary a good idea? I've been pondering whether I should get it or not.
Then I'd aim for an italian/catholic style name to fit their theme.

Combat squads suck, they just get shot up too easily and lose the ability to capture points which is a popular game players like to do for missions. I'd make a squad of 7-8 guys each because if you're playing small games its nice to be able to make a good formation of units. Are you using the basic codex or a specialist marine codex?
Oh and captains are pretty useless in this edition, Librarians are where its at.

Hmm, how would I best split up my marines into three squads then? I'm using the vanilla marine codex, it seemed like the best codex to get. =)
I've also fiddled a bit with a custom chapter colour, here it is

Looks like my DIY chapter, but with brown instead of blueish dark green.
Guys, I'm going to buy Paint and Green Stuff tomorrow. What's the best way to paint Pre-Heresy Death Guard colours with a slightly rotted look (I believe washes are best used to achieve that?)

So, Boba_Fett Seal of Approval on the colour scheme?
So, Boba_Fett Seal of Approval on the colour scheme?
Certainly, it looks nice. Might be hard to paint the mowhawk yellow though.
I've actually considered repainting the green in my army brown, which would make my army look exactly the same.
However, I've painted certain areas different colors on my marines. For example, some of my terminators have green thighs and black legs, while others have black thighs and green legs. It adds a bit of personality to your soldiers, while keeping a relatively uniform appearance. Same thing goes for helmets, backpacks and legs on my tactical marines. All the breastplates and arms are green though, because if I painted some of them black, it would make them too random.
Oh that mohawk is gold, should be fairly easy to paint. =)

I've thought about this too, make one shoulder pad a different colour or something like that to represent their task, and maybe letters or at least a number on it too.

Don't buy GS from GW they gouge you like shit. Also Vallejo sells boss paints

3E Eldar had an Alphabet of simple runes at the back IIRC, Runes for Courage and the like. There's a Tau font somewhere as well.
That's Heresy, Marine are not pretty, aside from those Primarch, but they're heretics so.

Any help at all?
Any help at all?
Practice on a garbage mini first to get the effect you want.
well pre heresy death guard weren't really rotting, they didn't really clean their armour much so a lot of dust and dirt.
[editline]10th November 2011[/editline]
or if you mean traitor death guard still showing their colours then uh best just look at some tutorials for painting dirt, rot etc
I want to get the original Death Guard Colour Scheme, White, Green Pauldrons, one Red Shoulderpad and Gold trimming. Then apply GS Rot and a Wash to 'tarnish' it.
Guys, I need a name for my Contemptor Dreadnought
Sorry it's late but I decided to use the Dwarf fortress name generator to create a name for your Dreadnought.
It came up with Imeshrith!
Which when actually translated means Sprinkledbell.
A full squad costs 170 pts, and adding melta costs 5 pts
I know it's extremely contraproductive, but I don't want to get transports ; The army itself already costs so much, and it's just going to be more expensive if I have to get more rhinos :v:
Oh you're right about the points, my bad. If you're going over 500pts it's best you gear all the way to a 750pts list. For fast attack options, maybe you'd want one or two assault cannon land speeders? Good anti-inf power as they also get free heavy bolters. The melta will be quite useless without a transport, however.

Captains are pretty cool when you're at a point level where you can bring in more wargear.

Vanilla marines are not the strongest, but they're still excellent. I personally don't care for the colour scheme, bright colours seem to work better with marines IMO. Brown & black is just kinda dull.

Hey man, the necron codex was rather good.
Just give him an ultimatum.
"Next time you make a shitty fan wank codex we will find the most horrible thing in said codex and do that to you!"
You know, in this non-canon Dornian Heresy thing someone posted a few days ago, the Ultramarines are actually a well developed and interesting chapter.
Here's a link if anyones interested:

I kinda like it more than the canon stuff, to be honest

Personally I'm not really that fond of vehicles, I'm definietly more interested in getting a foot-slogging army (which is incredibly stupid, I know, but I just like the idea of an army of SPESSH MARINESSS slowly but surely descending upon an enemy V:downs:V).
For 500 pts, I'll just skip five marines in one of the squad. I'll also skip the meltagun then, I should have enough anti-tank firepower with my rifleman dread and missile launchers.
For 750 pts, I've thought about getting a squad of assault terminators, give them hammers&shields, and just use them as a counter against whatever units can get up close.
