It takes 692 spartans to kill a space marine.
Now lets change spartans to heretical Imperial Guards and add ten times more enemies.
You know that vassal thing people use to play? As I can't get onto the site (Country and work blocks) does it support specialist games?
I'd love to have a few more people in the necromunda campaign, but everybody is so far away.
My brother has decided what he wants to get, A cadian battle squad, a pack of cadian troopers, a chimera and a leman russ.
So I think he'll be able to get the following army:
HQ
Company Command Squad 50 pts
TROOPS
Infantry Squad I 50 pts
Infantry Squad II 50 pts
Veteran Squad 155 pts
Meltagunx3
Chimera
Heavy Weapons Squad 75 pts
Autocannon
Heavy Bolter
Lascannon
FAST ATTACK
Armoured Sentinel 55 pts
HEAVY SUPPORT
Leman Russ Battle Tank 150 pts
Total points: 585 pts
What is the best way to outkit that army he'd get (1 command squad, 3 infantry squads, 1 heavy weapons team, 1 leman russ + 1 chimera)?
First of all, the list isn't legal. To take regular infantry squads, you have to take a platoon command squad to fill out the minimum requirements for an infantry platoon (one troops choice in total).
Theese guys could be equipped with 4x flamers and a chimera for maximum anti-infantry effectiveness.
The heavy weapons squad should all be equipped with the same heavy weapon, preferrably Autocannons to take on light vehicles, monsterous creatures and medium infantry at range. They are a bit too squishy for lascannons, and meltaguns fit in the same role, but he could give them missile launchers instead if you keep the company command squad nearby for orders.
I give my own company command squad 3x Plasma guns and a medic while they ride in a chimera, but if he wants to be more of a power gamer, or leave them walking, just give them 4x plasma guns and try to give them Bring it down! or they will kill themselves pretty quickly.
For close combat fun, combine the infantry squads and give them two power swords and two assault weapons (meltas or grenade launchers) and a commisar also with a power sword (NOT a plasma pistol!)
This will actually give his army a little bit of a punch in close combat, and you can bog down hard hitting stuff like terminators to give the rest of the army more time to shoot.
Remember: Don't be afraid to assault low strength 3-4 units with the sentinel, as it will bog down the enemy unit for a long time. The best weapon for it made for shooting would probably be a plasma cannon, as it can take on all kinds of infantry.
What about the newcrons?
I like the models and I'm definitely goin to buy at least a Newcron Lord to put on my desk to admire but I'll have to see how much Matt "Necrons teamed up with Blood Angels" Ward raped their fluff, before I make up my mind about them.

Whenever I read a book concerning when IG come across a chaos space marine 9/10 Some guardsman will get a lucky shot and kill the damn thing before it's had a chance to slay much more than 3-4 IG.

I have to nitpick about the prow of the ships and how it looks inside.
Most Imperium ships have a prow designed for ramming and it just looks way to clean inside. Most Imperium ships are centuries and potentially millenia old. Just doesn't feel like an Imperium ship at all on the inside.

I hate this so much. Fluff always makes chaos marines look like pansies, especially since chaos marines are supposed to be more dangerous and experienced than a space marine.
Some chaos marines are veterans from the Heresy era, others are basically fresh recruits and worse than a common spess mehrine.
Found a sweet axe in Fallout NV, now I wish someone made some Berzerker armor. Blood Magpies will have to do because their armor is red.

Aw shucks, I don't think he has enough money to get stuff for two infantry platoons though AND a HQ, I guess we're just going to have to play it anyways ; Maybe use veterans instead of Infantry platoons?
Only 'problem' would be the heavy weapons, but he can just place them in the veterans squad at the cost of two veterans.
Would that be feasible? Using veterans instead, kitting the command squad with plasma and let them drive around with the chimera?
I'm sure my brother is going to get more chimeras later, he wants to get a mechanized army later on. =)

Mechanised Melta Vets are pretty much what everyone takes.
Isn't mechanised infantry pretty much standard these days?

Pretty much every army now has dedicated transports cheap enough to be worth taking.
Turned most matches on regular sized tables into "ramming demolition derbys"

If he wants a mech army later on, just go with veterans and load them out with special weapons that aren't flamers and a heavy weapon or two, then the list would be legal, but much less durable in close combat.
If he has a limited number of chimeras, stick a vet. squad with 3x meltaguns in one, and let the plasma CCS hide in cover, as they have longer range and benefit more from orders like bring it down and fire on my target.
Ten-four, thanks for taking the time to teach a stupid newbie. =)
Another question : Which dreadnought is the best, regular, venerable or ironclad? One friend has expressed interest in getting orks, so I was thinking about possibly getting a dreadnought to counter infantry/CQC, is getting one of those dreads and kitting it with anti-inf/cqc a good idea or should I just get more troops?
No worries, I'm also somewhat new myself, I just happen to have an IG army and currently starting an Ork army.
Dreadnoughts are great at tarpitting infantry hordes for longer periods of time, just watch out for thoose nasty warbosses and their STR 10 power klaws. Also hidden Nobs can be STR 9 on the charge, so take the dread with the highest front AV rating and a high weaponskill and you should be able to take on almost everything the orks can bring, as they don't have much other than warbosses and deffrollas that is STR 10. Put as many flamers on the dread, and other closed ranged stuff and you should be golden.
That would be a tossup between Venerable (who has WS 5, but 12 in front armour) and Ironclad (who has WS 4, but 13 in front armour).
The ironclad has close combat weapon on one arm, and seisimic hammer (which can be replaced with chainfist for free), and have built in heavy flamers.
The venerable on the other hand is venerable, has higher WS, but can't get two close-combat weapons, which means it'll only get two attacks in CC and can't fire two heavy flamers before charging into combat.
It does look like the ironclad is much better suited for close combat, whereas venerable is more competent than the ironclad, but costs a lot more, and is more suited for staying off CC.
I just know that if I had a vanilla marine force, I would love to have an ironclad dread. The higher AV is also much tougher on Orks, as only nob squads with a Waagh banner have WS5, and you should really avoid getting into CC with thoose guys.
Ironclads are cool as fuck but once again a regular dread is generally more worth it. Unless you absolutely need a melee dread you're best sticking to regular dreads.
I see we are talking about IG armies, I have a command squad, an infantry platoon, a leman russ, and a heavy weapons team. I was planning on getting a squad of veterans and a chimera to finish up my army.
Autocannons would be better suited for my army if I take a veteran squad with meltas + chimera right?
Yes, or it could be missile launchers depending on what armies you usually play against.

Them orks are tempting.
The prices oh god
