Heavy Weapons (Autocannon, Lascannon, Missile Launchers etc) are available as plastic models in the form of the Cadian and Catachan Heavy Weapon team boxes.
A number of metal heavy weapon teams are also available, but, imho look a lot worse.

Sorry that was worded badly, I meant heavy weapons like plasmas and meltas in a vet cadian squad. The pack only comes with flamers and grenade launchers

Considering lasguns have zero recoil, holding the stock against your shoulder isn't really an issue.

Some patterns do, has something to do with expanding gas or w/e. All due to GW's "everything is canon!" philosophy.

You'd need to buy a Codex and some Infantry, the Imperial Guard Battleforce is the best value for money you'll get, but it includes no commander. Look through the codex and decide from there what type of Commander you want.

Only problem is they would all be psychotic rambling morons.Because grimdark.
Also with an IG army I would recommend getting a box of Guardsmen and spending your sweet time finding a style/regiment. You will need paint, a shitty old plastic cup to hold water, tissue, glue, pliers and brushes.
Radical / Puritan meter. Stormtrooper, Arbite, Techpriestess, (blue) Eldar warlock, Ork and SoB companions. Romance options. $15 day 0 DLC. Plot about an ancient (Necron) evil awakening.

He can make a Company Command Squad and two veteran squads with the units he gets in the Battleforce though. =)
I mainly want to collect the minatures, noone here plays it (sadly).
So, what kind of paint? What brushes? That sort of stuff.
