Katawa Shoujo is the average length of other Visual novels, but I must say that it really depends on the arc. I wish it went for a little longer in Hanako's arc, but wished it was way shorter in Shizune's, for an example.

Not done with it yet, but I've been enjoying Hanako's arc more than Shizune's simply because there is more cross character interaction. In Shizune's arc you're basically with her and Misha all the time, bar one setting late into the arc.
I just reached the second act and I seem to be spending a lot of time with Emi. Does that mean I'm inadvertently doing her arc or does this always happen?

There is 3 acts for each girls, plus the 1st act for Hisao. There is 5 arcs that you can follow.

If you got the cutscene where you hang out with her at the beginning of act 2, Then yes.

Now, I need to know whether the Rin artworks are public domain or if an artist on the team did them, because I want some of those on my wall.
I've just finished Emi's route as the first one ever. It was touching, but didn't make me cry, even though it was pretty close few times.
