I didn't play the Layton series, so I won't comment. :v:
I think I would say any game with a considerable amount of text (In a text box) while having an image of background and foreground/characters with music could be considered a visual novel.

I actually started to cry silently for a long time. I think my emotions don't just come immediately.
And even though I finally fell asleep, I woke up like 3 hours after and couldn't sleep for over an hour because I've been thinking about Emi all the time, thus finding the post quoted below at least somewhat true.

My mind is completely shattered right now, I had no idea that the story would hit me so hard as it did.
I was constantly reminded of myself a few years ago, I just did what I did because I didn't know what to do otherwise and then they transferred me to another class for no apparent reason(For me anyway, I later found out why) and I, just stopped, I completely shutdown.
Everyday I went to school, I hated it, I lost touch with all the people I knew and the other people in my class were A-holes.
Everything started anew when I flunked the year and I found myself in yet another class although these guys weren't so bad as I initially thought they would be and I kind of became more open again, still feeling really down though.
Then I went to college and I guess that is where this ends, I never really closed off that chapter in my life, and now it hit me like a brick.
I think I am going to lay down for a while.

After completing Hanako's last week, I haven't touched the game once.
I don't think I can do any of the other characters, I should of done Hanako's last :(

Just force yourself to do another one. That's what I did.
And I just finished Shizune's route, it was very tiring and I kept getting distracted a lot. So my playtime for it was 15hrs.

I'm not thinking right now, my mind is completely fucked, I can't think straight anymore and my legs feel weak. I'm a complete blur.
Just finished Emi's storyline. I didn't find it as emotional to me as Lilly's or even Hanako's, but I still very much enjoyed it. It feels good to actually finish it properly after I screwed up the first time.
Can anybody give me any recommendations on other Visual Novels that are similar to this and may create the same kind of feelings?
