Holy shit, I just realised that Katawa Shoujo had a panel at Manifest, and I was there (at the event, not the panel)
Anyway, here's a transcript I found of said panel, regarding Kenji.

Crud: Kenji, unfortunately, is loosely based off of Anonymous22, the Shizune writer. Yeah, I think it’s sort of self-inserted him into the story like that. It was one of those characters… we had wanted to put a friend character in because there was not enough characters early on. There were only the five girls and the one guy and we felt we needed more people so he just popped up one day and it was like let’s just put a guy in his hall, he can wear glasses, he can be blind, whatever. And from then on he took his own spin and A22 just forced his character in there which became that sort of nutjob.
Suriko: The situation with a lot of the side characters was, they usually, they’d be written by a few people just because people wanted to have that character in their path, because they liked the look of them, or they liked the idea of them, but they really didn’t know what to do with it. Then one writer would write that character really well and everyone would just say “Okay, that’s good, we’ll use his character, we’ll use that version”, and that happened with Kenji.
Crud: That happened with Kenji, very much so. In fact, Delta has written one scene for the game, and that is the Kenji end. What was it?

higurashi wasn't supposed to be creepy, people just watch all the gore scenes (there's like, 3-4 of them in total anyway) and assume it's some kind of ultradark horror anime. sure it's got some dark scenes but the first arc of the first season is the peak, from there it's more about the mystery, and seeing how they escape the wheel of fate/torment

Well it wasn't really supposed to be a straight up horror show. It was mainly a psychological thriller.

Well, that's it, Lilly's path is finished. The last path I had to do is done now. I feel really happy even though it's all finished. I'm still surprised that this story was able to make me feel so many feelings, I didn't expect it to.
I really enjoyed Lilly's path, It's still hard to say which path is my favorite, It's something I'll have to think about, but I'm pretty sure Lilly's would be in the top three.
One of my favorite parts of Lilly's path was[sp]the rooftop lunch with Emi, Rin, Hanako, and Lilly, I think it's the most main characters in one spot in the whole game, I was half expecting Shizune and Misha to show up uninvited too. I also think the part with Emi and the test results was funny.[/sp] I was also surprised by how many times Hisao[sp]had trouble with his heart in this path, way more then the others.[/sp]For a while near the end I was sure I'd messed up somewhere and got the bad ending.[sp]I mean, with ending up in the hospital again and Lilly not being there, it seemed pretty bad to me.[/sp] But then I heard [sp]the music from the music box playing I just started smiling and didn't stop smiling in till the end.[/sp] Once I got back to the main menu I just sat there listening to the jukebox for a while feeling pretty happy.
I'm really glad I decided to play this game and that I decided to look at this thread. If it wasn't for this thread and all the people giving such good reviews, I might not have even tried this game and would have missed all this fun I had.
I think I made the right choice be doing Lilly's path last, It just feels right somehow. There's still the other endings and I still want to do Shizune's path again, but I think that can wait for a while. I'm just glad to have played this game, It was a lot of fun and I'm definitely going to keep it on my computer.
That's pretty much how I felt about it, too.
Now, just as a sidenote, the spoiler for Shizune people were talking about was [sp]her and lilly being cousins?[/sp]
