I actually know someone who has permanently scarred skin. Around the shoulder only but it is skin, just very bumpy and not smooth. It doesn't taste like bacon.

The burns I've felt don't feel like leather at all. I don't really know how to explain it, it was basically normal skin but lumpier and with varying thickness, giving it a harder or softer feel depending on where you touch it.
But that's only second-degree a few months after healing. I don't know what ten-year-old burns would feel like.

They're usually drier than normal skin but if you treat them well, basically a little harder version of what you just described.
