Could it be those torn paper drawings? The way the pictures represent your progression through the arcs from the main menu based on the saves, the same way HL2 displays your game progress by displaying different levels behind the main menu.

I've played through each arc now, except for Rin. I think I'm going to wait with that one until my depression goes away since I've heard it's the most emotional one and the others hit me pretty hard aswell.
