Actually she says that she went to the school, but not why. All we know is that she wants to teach sign language, but I doubt you'd have to go to a school for the disabled to learn that.
It's never really revealed. They probably just couldn't decide and left it open to speculation.

I remember Emi always having a "lesser quality" sprite, but unless you really pay attention to it it isn't that noticeable.
Except when she has a close-up or when she does her "puppy-dog-eyes", then you really see how crappy it is.
I like Emi's renders the most, actually.
After playing a bit, Lilly's path is really my favorite.

The original one seemed to fit the general character art style just fine. The new one just sort of looks like an old placeholder

Although, Umineko is more of a "sound novel" because it puts audio and music (the music of which is awesome) above graphics.

If you like visual Novel, you definitively have to Check out Fate/Stay night. However, it is not a slice of life, and more action-oriented. It's however one of the best Visual novel out there.
If you want more slice of life, then there's a lot to go on. Like the user above me quoted, you can go with Yume Miru Musuri. There's also Clannad, Kanon to check on, even if the artwork is a bit messy.
Cross Channel is also about a school for handicapped, but in this case it's mentally handicapped.
Strongly recommended.

Well, you do get the option to fuck her at one point if you're doing Shizune's route, but that ends about as well as you'd expect.
