Cold porcelain on green glass tile. The smell of sterilized plastic and the mournful hum of fluorescent lights. I'm tied to the stagnant damp hospital bed by the weight of the gods, gripping at my bones. It wasn't the end, I knew that now. But I wished it were.
Malt liquor on a cold night. The ravings of lunatics, me and my only friend. The only friend a man like me can have. The events that led up to now are still replaying in my head, a scratchy old film played on a dull white board in a forgotten car park. The fall was euphoric, it had a sense of closure I had been searching for ever since I took the first draw from that dull brown bottle in the rocky expanse of the academy roof. It would have been a good ending. But I wasn't the sort of guy who got good endings.
It was a miracle chance that kept me alive. One in a million they said. Should have died. Wish I did. But wishes don't come true for men like me.
I know why I'm still alive, even if the doctors don't. I've been dying a slow death, one that can't be avoided. I'm set on the path of destiny, waiting for the fates to be through writing my story so I can finally lay down into the grave that even now waits for me just over the horizon. But I have to play along with the script I've been given, it's only here that I finally realize that. Funny, it's the worst thing I can think of.
To make sense of it, I have to go back. Back to the night the pain began.
