In bc2, they were actually very helpful because you had a little sensor ball.

Simply put, it depends on the player.
You can have someone sit on a hill being useless a whole round, or you could have someone sneaking to key points giving your squad a game winning spawn point.

Recon is great close assault with the t-ugs, quick plant get your shotgun out or mp7, asval or whatever you want.

It's a real shame no one uses it, when someone does I almost always get a one hit kill with my guided missile, feels awesome to give some air support to your team.

Honestly, it really isn't if you find some fun in the recon. I found the best way to get kills here was on Seine Crossing by defending the Back Street flag. Through the archway, there's a railing on the other side of the road. I tend to shoot people camping there if the opposition's spawn deployment is the area behind.
If you like it and get used to it, with some patience, it will come naturally! It's definitely much easier after getting the straight pull bolt though.
