SOFLAM is useful for simply having a (for some reason) hard to kill camera that can easily spot anything and zoom in, that you can access at any time.
Very useful if you put it overlooking a base while you cap it, so you can see enmey threats as they come to you exactly where they are. Also very useful for spotting targets in general for you or others, making jets/helicopters throw up flares/ECM early, etc.
It's also a nice distraction. I almost prefer it to MAV simply because I can set and forget it, while MAV requires me to focus on it.

I saw a video of a guy using a flashlight, it looked like a car with its high beams on.
Same for the LAM. Sometimes, I kept getting this red shade over my view on the SP, it was annoying as fuck and I even thought it was a bug. Then I saw their guns had LAMs attached to them.
Rather genius idea of giving use to such a thing on multiplayer.

It's still pretty random(i'm sure it's not truly random, but it feels like it) but it usually doesn't happen for a few matches.
I really wish I knew what was causing it. It's not overheating or lack of power. And the event viewer just says the bf3.exe fucked up.

No, but it increases the speed when locking on to aircraft.
I just got a noscope kill to a helicopter pilot from about where the attackers spawn to where the defenders spawn with the SV98. I jumped out of my chair and bounced about with excitement yelling to my buddy:
"DID YOU FUCKING SEE THAT?! LIKE CHRIST! HAHAH I BET THAT FUCKER IS LIKE WUT"

Shotguns have been hit by the nerf stick just a bit too much, they are still formidable in buildings, specifically the apartments of seine / metro, but they are almost always worthless anywhere else, the Mass is a great shotgun though, shame i hardly get a chance to pick it cause i have to pick smokes all the time.
For maps like Caspian, you'll never be close enough to use it effectivly, unless you have the drop on someone. In which case you could use you're pistol to the same effect.
I feel slightly annoyed by the shotguns, i was pretty much an exclusive 870 shotty player in bc2, while the gun play for everything else feels the same to me in bf3 , the shottys leave a sour taste.
I dispise the usas 12 and the gameplay that encourages from the frag rounds though.
Soflam is a great anti vehicle tool (namely anti helicopters), and it's not to shabby at spotting either (manually though), asess the maps and player skill level on the other side, and that of your own, there's been games where iv'e picked it for anti air purposes, we ended up with about 4 but no javalins or guided tank shells to do anything with it luckily the enemy team couldnt find the engine start button on the viper let alone fly it.

Not necessarily. I like using the MAV as a mobile TUG-S, moving it up forward in front of my squad and me as to warn all of us of any threats in an area, then setting it down somewhere hidden so it can continue to ping while I help assault the position.
More to the point, you can just hide it somewhere where there's a lot of enemies and then return to whatever you're doing while your MAV helps your team do something else, allowing you to set and forget.

Oh wow I never realized that MAV just lays on the ground when you stop using it, I figured it went away forever. Sweet.

When shit starts going badly for me I end up using jets to kamikazi bomb tanks and mobile AA. It's surprisingly effective and fucking hilarious.
Oh man, I just had the best squad-mate I think I've ever had.
We went around in tanks, jeeps, helicopters... capping points, killing everyone, taking out tanks, helicopters, jets... always following each other, working together, and being awesome. We almost never even said a word - whenever he would type something it'd be in all caps and not that understandable.
I even got a repair torch kill:
