Team Fortress and Portal are far more successful than Half Life is right now because as far as anyone knows the series is dead. At least until proven otherwise.

If anyone's actually interested in my opinion: [sp]I doubt that they will call it Half-Life 3 because it continues HL2's story arc, the fight against the combine and all that. If HL1-HL2's story transition basically just had some of the same characters and almost everything else was completely new, then why should they call the game Half-Life 3?[/sp]
I doubt they will call it Half life 3, as it is the same story arc. It's not a massive leap like from HL1 to HL2.

Perhaps, but it's not like every other game out there does episodes rather than sequels. Halo, Gears of War, Call of Duty, hell pretty much 95% of games out there are either sequels or prequels. So you can't say for sure if they'll call it a sequel or an episodic release. They haven't said anything about it to begin with.
Since EP3 will probably give you a choice between using/destroying the Aperature shit, I hope that the choice of using it will result in Alyx going batshit crazy because her dead dad specifically said to destroy it. Possible Alyx bossfight?
Doubt you'd have to fight Alyx. She's emotionally devastated, yes, but not insane. She wouldn't attack Gordon for it- she would be upset, yes, but won't turn on him.

Difference is Halo and Gears were trilogies from the start, and Call of Duty has a different story for each game (Except Modern Warfare)

I think it'll have enough new content to warrant calling it Half-Life 3, but they'll still call it Episode Three just for continuity's sake.

It's called Episode Three, Valve have continually referred to it as Episode Three when refusing to answer questions about it. Heck, the small details leaked from Alien Swarm and Dota 2 refer to it as Ep3. It's called Episode Three. Deal with it.

As much as I agree that it's EP3, the same evidence calls CS:GO "cstrike2".
I don't care what Valve calls it, they could call it Half Life 3 or Prospero or Buttcakes. I'll still call it Episode 3, and I'll still play it.

What makes you think that? According to EP2 commentary and interviews of the time, EP3 is in development since 2006. Half-Life 2 was a massive leap and it was made from scratch during '98-'04 (6 years). EP3 is already 5 years in development and it will not come out this year.
I'm not talking about some "Source 2" because we are already playing source 4 or something (OB and L4D had some pretty big improvements and other companies like Crytek would call it source 2 and 3)
