same has been said for every major gaming expo/event for the past 3 or so years
Didn't Valve stay completely quiet about Half-Life 2, and then finally said : "It's out next year guys, here's a trailer." at E3? It isn't crazy to think they'll do the same with EP3/HL3.

It's entirely possible that it could be announced at the award show, but it was also just as likely for all those past events.
I'm giving up on ep 3.
Because if it does ever get released, it'd be a pleasant suprise. But hey, I don't see that happening in the next few years. 'Sides, we've waited for it so long that it'll never live up to the hype, and it'll probably crash and burn like Duke Nukem Forever.
It's been almost 5 years and still nothing about the half-life game.

Okay, bye.

Team fortress 2 took 9 years. Give valve time.
Then again portal 2 only took 4 years...
Would you rather have a good game or half finished piece of shit?
Really good games don't get developed over night.

Just because I don't want to spend a half-life waiting for the game doesn't mean I want them to finish it over a night.

It's only been 4 years and 47 days good job

There's a difference between the the developers behind Duke Forever and the Half-Life franchise. With Duke Forever, it dragged on to the point of being absolutely fucking retarded, and what we got as a result (or whatever we would've gotten regardless, by the time of its release) simply didn't live up to the hype. With Valve and especially the developers behind Half-Life franchise, we may have to wait a few years for what it is we're getting, but seeing as how Valve's track record has come out looking pretty spiffy with damn near every release, we at least know we'll be getting a damn good product. Or at the very least, a decent one.

TF2 also went through 2 entirely different games before it reached where it was on release.
EP3 or whatever it will be taking a few years could be a good thing. It means they want to get it right, it will be an upgraded engine and could even be about as long as HL2 instead of just another episode length game.
Or they've just sat with their head in their hands, looking at a blank whiteboard, repeating "oh crap, oh crap, what do I do?" for the past four years. Although personally I hope not.
Remodeling for new engine
Remodeling for new engine
New version of Source? Maybe like the step up from Goldsrc to Source?
I just hope that if they update the engine in any great way, I will be able to run it. My pre-built is starting to show it's age now and some of the only games it can actually run are the older source ones.
But, valve seems to usually be pretty good about optimizing for lower machines, so I don't really know.
I imagine Episode 3 having a version of source with Better Textures, Dynamic water (for cinematic purposes though), and more as far as engine improvements, maybe even destruction physics?

Portal 2 did a similar thing, though the puzzles could likely be recycled through all the versions of it with the Portal Gun.

I can honestly say, I was actually waiting for Team Fortress 2: Brotherhood of Arms.

The only thing that I want them to add is modern-day shaders. Fully dynamic lighting would be a decent addition.
can we have lightmaps on static models in EP3 like UE3 has
pretty please

and self-shadowing to go along with it.
[editline]30th November 2011[/editline]
I think that would make the game look ten times better. No more awkwardly lit large props or objects, no more mis-matching lighting schemes when against a lightmapped brush. God damn, Source has some catching up to do.

We have fully dynamic lighting, just limited to one light at a time
I can honestly say, I was actually waiting for Team Fortress 2: Brotherhood of Arms.
I really like the concept, but it's basically a better Battlefield made by Valve. I'd like to see it exist someday, but I'm glad we got the TF2 that we did.
We have fully dynamic lighting, just limited to one light at a time
Yes, and incredibly grainy shadows. I hear that's nVidia's fault though.

Actually that was fixed in Portal 2
Damn, I didn't notice that. Ace.
Actually that was fixed in Portal 2
But only on maximum shadow settings and only when there's not a lot of shadows.
Well, we're hear all about it this year so let's just hold on tight and hope for the best :downs:
