l4d2 does not look much better than hl2 imo
The best showcase of source is episode 1 and parts of episode 2.
Hl2 is too old to use as a fair comparison and left 4 dead 2 was just plain ugly.

Portal 2 is by far the best example of Source looking good, followed by EP2 and Left 4 Dead 1 imho.

I honestly think that Portal 2 looks better with it's post processing effects and textures. Many will agree and many will not giving valid points why it's EP2 which has better graphics. But we Valve fans know better than anyone that graphics don't make a game so please shut the fuck up and stop measuring penises of your favorite Valve game.

When I was first playing Portal 2, the introduction when you're being knocked into the loading dock it looked almost to absolute real, Source has came a long way since Half Life 2 and to be perfectly honest HL3 will have some really neat scripted scenes/cinematic moments.

I personally find BF3 to be ugly, they overuse dynamic lights.
Source for me was best in Portal 2 and Episode 1, if you go through the Hospital in Episode one you will see what I mean, the phong in that game was perfect, not too strong like Left 4 Dead 2, but it was there unlike in HL2.
Source also still has the best facial animation than anyone else.
