Even though Source's facial animation is impressive, I still think L.A. Noire had the best facial animation to date.
Agreed, L.A. Noire has a great facial animation system
source would like way better if they used dynamic lighting added terrain heightmaps (not getting rid of displacements) and added Parallax mapping ( i know you can code it in but im talking about them making use of it) i think source would look awesome (because i really like the way materials look on models in source)
Dec 12 2012 they will release Ep3
RustySpannerz;33699984']I personally find BF3 to be ugly, they overuse dynamic lights.
Not that it's ugly, but the graphics engine feels like Firefox overstocked with add-ons.
Even though Source's facial animation is impressive, I still think L.A. Noire had the best facial animation to date.
Oh yeah, I forget about that game.
I'm hoping that we'll learn more about Gman, he's so fucking mysterious.
Yeah I agree.
Even though Source's facial animation is impressive, I still think L.A. Noire had the best facial animation to date.
I feel that L.A. Noire suffers from a serious case of "Dead Eye" Where even though the face may have good animation, the eyes ruin it. Also, sometimes even the body movement, making it seem like the face was just glued onto the model.
I hope they revise their technically-cutscenes in Ep3. If I have to choose between being stuck in a small room with nothing to do but listen to some exposition and a skippable cutscene, I take the latter. The first option is neat for the first run, but in almost every rerun the pacing will be off.

I don't want to get rid of the dialogue, I just want to shortcut the bits I don't care about in a replay. On my second run I want to try out new possibilities, but in those technically-cutscenes I can't do that. Other games can compensate for that with dialogue options where you can pick different things in replays. Can't do that in Half-Life for obvious reasons, so all you can do is jump in Alyx face and test if the shotgun ammo is still good.
If all the dialogue rooms were filled with awesome props and stuff you can interact with, just like Kleiner's lab in HL2 and his mini-teleporter, I doubt you'd find this part of the replay boring.
All I want for christmas is...well you know what it is.

Wasn't that song made in less than an hour?
Wasn't that song made in less than an hour?
I can't believe its been almost an entire year since I last heard that song. Time sure does fly.
Am I the only one who thinks Portal 2, and l4d 2 looks tf2 style cartoonish? I can't explain it. It just seems like the textures look way less realistic than hl2, ep. 1, ep. 2, and portal. It is almost like the dirty textures don't have the same "grime" look of source engine past. It's kinda disappointing. That and portal 2 had almost no movable objects. You couldn't pick up literally anything other than the testing cube.

i really don't give a fuck what we get next, as long as we get something and it has to do with the half-life universe
What I'm worried, is that like I said on the previous post, hl3 will not have movable objects due to source engine limitations. [editline]13th December 2011[/editline]
i dont get whats wrong with portal 2 looking cartoony though? it looks perfect with that art style
It takes away from the creepy atmosphere. Makes it too cartoonish and less realistic. Portal 1 made me think, "wow there is really something sinister going on here".

Half Life 2 just has a more serious artstyle than Portal 2 and all that
i really don't give a fuck what we get next, as long as we get something and it has to do with the half-life universe
More Portal :D

WTF not again, I don't wanna get my hopes up, please :(
thats because the portal series isnt meant to be realistic, valve wanted portal 2 to emphasize more on that cartoony theme it has and made it into an art style
I don't think Portal 2 looks cartoony. Things might look cleaner & more polished than they do in HL2 & other such games, but that's moreso Aperture's style than anything.
I don't even know what to think about this. Damn you and your seemingly mixed messages valve! (even though i love the mysteriousness of it)
it is cartoony you cant deny that, its not the cleanliness, look at the portal gun portal 2 is supposed to be cartoony, saying its not cartoony just because its apertures style is like saying half-lifes theme doesnt focus on oppression just because xen and earth are enslaved by the combine
Probably the reason why I find it hard to take Portal (aperture science) seriously [editline]14th December 2011[/editline] I don't know, I thought Portal had the similar art style of left 4 dead. It wasn't really cartoony it just suited aperture science's innovation, the art work was impressive.
I feel that L.A. Noire suffers from a serious case of "Dead Eye" Where even though the face may have good animation, the eyes ruin it. Also, sometimes even the body movement, making it seem like the face was just glued onto the model.
Actually, the faces ARE just glued onto the model. All it is is an animated face texture. Basically, it's just the recordings of their faces all stitched together into an animated texture. EDIT: What? It's true. :c It's also kind of obvious. I mean, if you look at the faces while they're talking, you can see a lot of grain - something that wouldn't happen if it was actually animated. Plus, a lot of times when they finish talking, the face transitions back to the original face, it doesn't naturally revert back like an actual animation would. I'm not saying it's crap, in fact it's still pretty great, it's just that it's nothing more than an animated texture. And I'm not saying the game is crap, it's actually a really good game, and I loved it.
