Don't think anything bigs gonna happen. But God I wish it would
I think the day they finally admit Episode 3 is on it's way, I will be so excited I won't be able to do anything else. Half Life is like my all-time favourite game and I can easily replay them all the time, the thought of a new one coming out makes me moist.
trailer on the steam page is not working :D THIS MUST MEAN SOMETHING!

Cool Read on Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/frb2k/why_valve_could_release_half_life_3_tomorrow/
Ok, let's preface this before I start getting flamed into oblivion: I don't think this will actually happen. This is a "What if..." scenario that's been playing around in my head for a while, and I've been trying to weigh up the pros and cons and I honestly think that what I'm suggesting would work in Valve's favour. Obviously I could be wrong, and if you feel I am, I'd welcome the discussion. With that all said, let me begin. (For ease of reading, I'm referring to the game as Half Life 3 or HL3 instead of Half Life: Episode 3) So, imagine if you logged onto Steam tomorrow as you would normally. Only today is not normal. Today, you're greeted with a news item that simply has the Half Life 2 icon. Only where the 2 should be, there's a 3. You rub your eyes, and look again. Yep, definitely a 3. Below, you have a button that reads only "Wake up and smell the ashes". "Can't be", you think to yourself. So you go online, and do a google search for Half Life 3. While that loads, you hit you're twitter client and load it up, and open a new tab on your browser to bring up Facebook. So this is my point. If Valve were to just release the game, with zero fanfare, no advertising, and no fanfare, where's the upside? Think about the scenario above, and let me go through each point WITH BULLETS:

Every single person who played Half Life 2 has Steam, or is at least aware of Steam. That's your established fanbase all finding out about the game as soon as they turn their computer on.
Forums and Facebook would pretty much explode with comments ranging from "OMFG HL3 WTFF I DIE!" to "Half Life 3 released today. I'm not going to work today. I might just end myself after i finish it as I have nothing else to live for." Reddit would also feel the burn, and searches for #hl3 would suddenly jump to to top of Twitter trends.
Valve are the only company who could pull off a move like this as they own the game and the distribution channels, they have to answer to no one.
Half Life 3 is one of a few games you could pull this off with, as the hype is still there for the release even after all this time, and people would buy it without reviews or previews due to the previous games' quality and the developers reputation.
The past 2 or 3 years is the only time in history you could do this, with all the social networks that the target market are involved in, word would reach them within the day of the release. Also, the infrastructure is in place for people to be able to download the game in a reasonable amount of time.
The shock value would outweigh the lack of advertising. Gaming and tech sites would be all over this as it's never been done before.
There could still be a post release advertising campaign for the DVD release if they wanted, just to capture the attention any stragglers who live in mountains or the jungle.
To repeat one point, IT'S NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE. And would likely never be done again. The perfect storm of circumstances surrounding HL3 would be very tough to replicate, so the novelty value of a move like this would generate huge amounts of free publicity.
So there's my 2 cents. Do I think this is a likely scenario? Fuck no. Would it be undeniably awesome? Holy shit yes.
If Episode 3 gets released soon, we can (probably) expect a huge drop in sales from competing shooters. Except Duke Nukem, he has a bone to pick with Gordon.
This is completley true. I cant think of a game series besides Half Life that would be able to do this
Well, it's not true... But a really good theory.
Cool Read on Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/frb2k/why_valve_could_release_half_life_3_tomorrow/
I wouldn't want that to happen personally. Sure it would be awesome as fuck and my life would be complete but I have slow as shit internet so downloaded Half Life 3 would take a day/night so I would be shitting my pants with excitement as everyone else plays through it.
Would happen anyways whenever it comes out
Valve lets you pre-download a few days before release.
Gordon is smoking weed whilst fighting Combine.
Gordon has always been high, ever since HL1. It makes perfect sense, doesn't it? Hallucinations of a creep in a blue suit stalking you... And the combine aren't some alien race that has taken over earth, they're the POLICE and the MILITARY. They are chasing after Gordon, because he got high back in Black Mesa and thought everyone were aliens, so he went on a giant massacre and killed everyone! Then as he arrived in some city, he teamed up with Al'Qaeda, and helped them fire a nuke up into the air! He even pressed the button that launched the nuke.
If Episode 3 gets released soon, we can (probably) expect a huge drop in sales from competing shooters. Except Duke Nukem, he has a bone to pick with Gordon.
Would the world end if there was a Half-Life/Duke Nukem crossover?
Probably been said before but I can see Barney walking up to the player holding 2 mugs of beer and saying "Now, about that beer I owed ya!", shortly before getting stabbed in the back by something unseen and dying :saddowns: Fuckin' pageking gawdayum
2 mugs of beer Fuckin' pageking gawdayum
Wat, why would you put beer in a mug.
Wat, why would you put beer in a mug.
Bottle then, your argument is irrelevant.
http://www.succesfull.fr/index.php?option=com_succesfull&Itemid=6&l=en&JeuID=1169 Portal 2 achievements. Theres already a link in the Portal megathread, and a thread about it. But I thought I would put it here because I felt that it needs to be put somewhere more related to Episode 3. Theres an achievement listing called 'Ship Overboard'. This is blatently a borealis refrence. So it begins. Also, keep an eye out for the Gaben at GDC.
Although blatantly a Borealis reference, it could just be that you find a large area missing, a bit like it's been torn away, that was where the Borealis was. Of course, if we actually find it sitting there, then it'll start getting interesting.
Valve's on the list for GDC, aren't they? I don't know exactly HOW it all works there but I do think they're gonna unveil something more there.
I don't know if they could reveal anything now, except maybe a new trailer or Demo. Anything else would either spoil or not really be worth it.
Maybe they'll do something like last year, like giving a hint of a game presentation at E3.
I'm assuming that a trailer for episode 3 will play when you beat Portal 2.
Portal 2 has already been stated to be separate from Half-Life because they didn't think it'd work out well, but I just have the feeling that Valve's gonna troll us in it about Episode 3 or whatever the future installment will be.
I really didn't want to know about the Borealis thing... Damned spoilers.
