personally I'd rather have HL3 than Episode 3, valve never understood the point of 'episodic development' since it took them so long to release the damn things

Yeah, I think even they knew they were kind of missing the point of episodic games, and that is the ability to release games more frequently at a lower price while still maintaining good quality gameplay and story so that fans don't complain about the infrequency of releases. Well, fans are still complaining, and Episode 3 has maybe 2 pieces of concept art available to the general public and no actual news on anything concerning the gameplay or engine updates.
So yeah, even though they've said in the past that they want to wrap up this story arc before moving on to an actual sequel, I still think there's a chance they will just make a full-fledged sequel at this point.
Still, Gabe could have just been talking about the other game series' that Valve owns and they may still make Episode 3. Who knows.

I don't think Gabe/Valve is that vindictive in the sense that they'd drop all the work they've done on Ep3 (All the shit they announced they were doing and so forth) just because they don't feel like doing episodic content anymore. So there's hope they're still working on it, but [b]future[/b] games won't have such. You have to remember that Half-Life is a very guarded secret of Valve's. Just look back at HL1 and 2, both somehow got leaked and pushed development back by some time.

At this point if they actually did release Episode 3 as a 3-5 hour episode then it would be pretty embarassing for them. Any new Half Life game pretty much has to be HL3 now.
I'm still interested as to why they never did release it when they should have. It's not like Valve didn't have the resources to just poop out another few hours worth of HL2 maps and call it an episode.

I'm betting they're going to finish up episode 3 but it'll have some sort of multiplayer, like a much more expansive half-life 2 deathmatch, then they'll get started working on source 2.0 for Half Life 3.

In Episode Three you'll fuck the Combine up and the story of Gordon Freeman will end
But when human rebuild their world they'll eventually become different factions
and a violent primitive society forms (with vortigaunts and headcrabs) and Freeman will be worshiped as a god
and Half Life 3 will be a very very massive multiplayer game which mentioned as the secret project not releasing in 5 years

The end of the story arc doesn't necessarily means the end of Gordon Freeman as a main character; it could literally be anything from simply the end of the combine's stronghold on earth to focusing from teleportation to time travel.
And I think the game will take place in a very different setting.
