Will MOBAs be the dominant game genre of the 2010s era?

Let's pray to god that they wont. I fucking hate them
It kinda feels like all these MOBAs are getting a bit... excessive.
I mean, the gameplay is fundamentally the same, so it's all the other stuff that makes people play a specific one. If you know how to attract a lot of people eager to do some microtransactions, you profit.
Why did I come into this thread thinking MOBAs are a black music award?

Oh that's MOBOs
As of January 2014, over 67 million people play League of Legends per month, 27 million per day, and over 7.5 million concurrently during peak hours.
But still this is irrelevant, if you walk up to a random person in the street and ask them what the most played video game in the world is, they're more likely to guess Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto or Angry Birds. Outside of the core community of gamers, no one knows what League of Legends is, let alone a MOBA.
this is basically wrong, lots of people do. dota and league of legends are known by people, maybe not as much as call of duty but still fairly well known.
I don't find them to be dominant, they have a large player base sure but that doesn't mean that the average person is going to play or understand a MOBA. The only reason they have such a high player base is their easy accessibility through the fact that DoTA is run through Steam (Making it quite noticeable, however not all Steam users would be into MOBAs) and League of Legends is also easy to get as you can just download the game for free. How many players are actually into the games and follow them? I can imagine a fair amount of players may be starting out or not that serious about it. They're gaining popularity but I wouldn't quite say their dominant yet.
I prefer the calling ARTS.
Action Real-time Strategy, which is exactly what it is, differing from your usual Real-time Strategy games.
As for 'MOBA' it stands for "Multiplayer Online" which is almost like an oxymoron because literally most games fit into that, and then "Battle Arena" which doesn't make a whole lot of sense either.
The last thing that reminds me of arenas is the WoW competitive PvP Arena.
I think all the new MOBAs like Dead Island moba and the vampire/werewolf/forgot the name moba and all the others are commiting a suicide. MOBAs are only good because of their difficulty. That's the thing that makes them different and "more then a game" for many people. So when people reached a skill level in one MOBA they most luckily have some time invested in it, thus won't jump to another MOBA even if it's better. Most players are in the giants: Dota and LoL. Their population will only grow. So basically new MOBAs are going to suffer a lot.
As for myself: screw this. I don't like MOBAs. My friends are obese with Dota 2 or LoL and it's pathetic. I don't understand the tournaments and all the obession about the game. In my opinion if you have to invest over 100 hours into a game you would be better off doing something useful. I actually invested ~1700 hours into Gmod, but that's over a period of 3 years and I do kinda regret it now.
That's only my opinion though.

It's OK if you like MOBAs, everyone has the right for an opinion, but you are wrong and screw you.
It's the Call of Duty effect. Publishers see Call of Duty and League of Legends numbers and assume that if they follow the same formula, they can get the same numbers. What the neglect to realize is that people already have Call of Duty and League of Legends, and don't really need the same thing twice.

You can have multiplayer that isn't online. Predominantly on consoles, but I've heard of some PC games that allow for multiple players on one computer. And technically the same issue exists with the acronyms "MMO/MMORPG". The "Battle Arena" part derives from the fact that MOBA maps generally follow the design principle of having two teams square off in a symmetrical (or mostly symmetrical) vaguely-arena-like map.
"Action" also isn't very descriptive either - don't all games have action of some kind? Unless you're playing something relatively slow-paced, like chess or Civ (which both can have their fast moments).

Anyway, I hope they don't, I can't stand them. My roommate plays League nonstop and my friends tried to get me into DotA 2 and I was just never able to get into it. The learning curve was too steep for me to have any fun with the game or even motivate me to try, and the communities have some of the most toxic assholes I've ever seen in a game.
Also a proper MOBA is not possible on a console, unlike all of the other dominant genres.
I don't think this is true, Smite would work on a console.
I loathe moba games, which is kinda funny because there are very little games that i hate. I have played moba games such as league of legends, Dota 2, Smite, Dawnstar, Prime Worlds, Infinity Crisis, and many other moba games that I failed to mention. Each and every single one of these games have the most toxic community ever, i've seen a few trolls here and there on normal mmo that all they do is duel spam, causes arguements on the general chat, and such but they never disrupt my gameplay at the slightest bit to where I have to deal with them each and everytime. However when it comes down to moba games, each and every single one of my games are filled with many trolls, many feeders, many people who put the finger at me and other people, and so on. I've permanent stop playing moba games as a whole because the communities in this game is the god damn worst of any game that i have EVER played, and i'm push to the end of wanting to get these games banned in the first place, because the fun in this game that was designed end up being nothing more then stress and agony by the community that have some short of sadistic tendencies.
I feel pressured into playing ARTS/MOBAs just because they are so popular, I'm the only one of my group of friends who doesn't seem to enjoy playing them 24/7
I think indie games in general are more the thing coming up on the rise to dominance these years. I will admit there is a bit of a MOBA train going on now but I don't think any of them will see the success levels that DOTA 2 and LoL both have.
i want mobas to die in general
they are the most annoying games in years
more than first person shooters
even if they give you base protection
where a giant lazer that kills the enemy if they even come near unless its dota
where you can tank the base laser for some reason....

This is so true. I've actually lost friends because I don't like playing MOBAs and they refuse to play any other games besides MOBAs. It's really kinda depressing. I really hope the MOBA trend will die out fast, even though I don't think it will, purely because the community is so utterly shitty. The fact that people latch onto these games and talk down to others who don't play it (or new players who have no idea what they're doing) is absolutely annoying. Maybe if the community was better I would be fine with MOBAs being more possible, but... I really just wish they would die in a fire.

The Auto defense in the main base is there to prevent enemy players from spawn killing. Base rape only happens if you and your team sucks at playing. Most of the time player lose in MOBAs due to failure to communicate with team mates and/or they are treating MOBAs like a team death match when the actual objective is to destroy the enemy base.
I've had played against a so called winning team who have more kills and yet they lost because they failed to defend their base.
MOBAs are most likely too steep in difficulty to become mainstream in the same sense as racers, platformers and first-person shooters. However, I see them having influence on other genres to the point where many games will come out that are effectively MOBAs played like a FPS or 3PS.
In my opinion, it won't. Like, when a genre reachs the sky, EVERYONE will try it. Happened with FPS and other genres. It's happening the same to Mobas. Good and kind people will play the games from the genre but bad, mean and rude people aswell.
The bad part of the community is quite a pain in the butt for everyone. Even to itself. And people will be tired of the people that act like "noob. l2p" to people that just want 1 hour of fun or something. Idk. That's my point of view. That's one of my personal downsides of the internet.
I kind of hope it doesn't become the dominant genre. The community is filled with people who take it way too seriously (this is the biggest factor that puts me off of it), and it's a genre that kind of requires cooperation (sometimes I really can't be bothered for that, especially after coming home from a long shift at work). Many games in the genre also inherently disadvantage poorer-performing players, such as Dota 2 and the character upgrades as the matches go on. But saying that, Valve has a history of that kind of stuff with the likes of Counter-Strike and all the good players getting Deagles, AKs and AWPs while some players can only afford some of the shitty pistols.
No genre should be dominant. However I would like to see more games like Trackmania, as well as fast-paced RTT games (eg something like multiplayer in Total War but in fast-paced ten minute matches instead).

i'm tired of those jerks who tell me l2p and shit
i already know how to play
you're just being a jerk who doenst understand theres people behind that montior with feelings too
the bad apple spoils the bunch and thats how moba is already a screwed genre
because people will get sick of the assholes who never actually do anything but bitch and rage or troll...
Indeed. Like Dota fans and LoL fans complain about each others but the shit is the same!
Indeed. Like Dota fans and LoL fans complain about each others but the shit is the same!
The main object is the same, but the 2 games play on a whole different level.
Also on topic: As other said, the same kind of stuff happened when FPS games were popular as other people have already stated. And the MOBA/ARTS/ASSFAGGOTS genre is a bit too hard for newer to actually learn all that stuff since you need to put hundreds or even thousands of hours into the game to play it better. Simple basics/concepts but harder to master.

Except they're more of an ARPG without persistant characters.

It's slowly happening. MOBAs Steep learning curve is a good reason to work as a good team. MOBAs promotes team building and will requires team work unlike FPS where people love to go solo. You can never go solo in MOBAs.
You should try MOBAs. It's really fun once you master the basics of the game. it's really like a game of Chess or a game of Chinese Airplane game.
I've really gone off playing MOBA's, i used to play a fair amount of League last year but i haven't touched it in a while, and i've not been tempted to go back to it since i have no reason to. These games are huge time vampires that suck up all of your time and there is no real guarantee that you'll come out of it saying that you enjoyed that. You might have three wins that day but i often came out of those three wins saying that it was shit. I'd rather play Call of Duty since your able to drop in, have a few games and say you've enjoyed that. When it comes to a MOBA, you have to set aside an hour each game and hopefully not get any distractions coming your way. Plus, the community 75% of the time sucks, which just builds up the unnecessary stress.
I could rant on about this for hours, something like League represents a pretty shit time for me which i've passed.
Unfortunately, as much as i've started to despise the genre for more personal reasons, this genre is going to be the dominate genre of the 2010's, the E-sports scene is huge and something like League has a easy enough learning curve that people who don't regularly play games can watch it and play it without much hassle. You don't even need to play it to enjoy it, there are people who watch the Esports scene of these games and have either previously played but quit or never touched them at all. A lot like Football or something. I can respect the Esports scene, but it's mostly not for me.
If MOBAs would be the dominant genre I think there would be ones a lot simpler than current ones(or maybe ones with better tutorials).
It is kind of hard to learn to play MOBAs, as there is a lot of stuff you have to know to be effective.
For example in dota(2) there around 100 different characters(In practice there are some characters you will hardly ever see) which each have different abilities and play styles(Some characters have similar play styles), there are also many different items (which sometimes have confusing interactions), and there is also stuff like denying which is non-intuitive.

In my experience unless you are very tanky you wont be able to tank the fountain's attack for very long(I think fountain's attacks are stronger then most characters).
Note that there are ways to fountain camp without worrying about dieing to the fountain.
(Mostly irrelevant but I think the fountain's attacks in dota is more of machine gun then a laser)

MOBAs communities may be toxic, but then again most games communities are.
(Personally though I haven't encountered that many toxic people, I think I have encountered more people who don't say a single thing all game).

They are only Toxic when they are losing. I mean who wouldn't go rage quiting if their team is losing badly due to some players doing badly?
I would surely hope not, but that seems to be what's going on. Millions upon millions play this genre, even people who are new to video games!
Phone games are really the dominant genre, which in my mind is awful. Deus Ex: The Fall is amazing for a mobile game and will be getting a PC port soon I believe.
