If they don't do an ARG, I want to see it just appear on the Steam store one day with 0 advertisement and see what happens.
They'll have high sales on Steam and that's it. Then they'll never look at Half-Life ever again.
i've seen this about a hundred times now
It's either that or: "this year at e3 the lights go out and then g-man says smell the ashes and then the half-life 3 logo appears and then gabe walks onto the stage and says three and walks off again and then a trailer plays and then the crowd goes crazy".

There would be fucking riots in the streets.
Because it builds hype the best.
edit: Bah, what do you guys know about marketing.
at this point i'm not sure they want any more hype
The funny thing is that Valve has not revealed any important information about upcoming (hopefully) Half-Life game to evade creating hype for this title and yet thanks to community (fake ARGs and stuff, leaks) it is probably the most wanted game in the industry at this moment. Poor Gabe.

It may just be me, but I don't have a huge feeling they're going to continue past Half-Life [Episode] 3 anyway. Where would it go from here? I'm like 99% sure the combine's going to be nonexistent after the next game.
Actually, at some points I wonder if they're even going to continue past Ep2.
[editline]2nd February 2014[/editline]
Unless ofc G-Man puts Gordon back in stasis to save him for the next time the world's in chaos.
You have to ask yourself: Do they need to carry on past Episode 3?

They could end the series in grace. Make a nice ending to HL3, don't try to milk it like 80% of the entertainment industry does with their successful productions, and in the meanwhile showcase how brilliant Source 2 is and how it could power completely different games.
They could still exploit the HL universe with Portal, hell, maybe even make a Blue Shift/Opposing Force for it. I just hope they keep things in perspective and not blindly try to exploit the success of the past series.
It's a risk, but trying new things is what makes this whole industry move forward, and Valve is one of the few that have the potential IMHO.

Yeah, they really don't need to continue HL after the next installment. They can edit the world around Freeman with Shepard and give you a "WHAT BARNEY WAS DOING IN THE BACKGROUND YAAAAAY" Blue Shift. After P2, I'm not sure how that can carry on unless [sp]there's still another subject in the Aperture facility.[/sp]
I would be cool if Barney returned in HL3, traveling with Gordon and Alyx to find the Borealis. He has probably still nightmares about that cat.
Facepunch still has nightmares about that cat..

Depends who you were, a majority of people thought it was pretty funny.
Still do

Don't ask or get banned

Milking it would imply that they continue to release titles more then the market demand - that requires them to produce a game at a non glacial speed. I'm not worried about valve milking any of their franchises.

it's a satisfactory continuation of a franchise they only adopted after l4d's release

TBH I didn't like it and it felt incomplete considering how little they added from L4D1 to L4D2.
L4D just wasn't what I expected it to be. It's too fast paced. I want a Left 4 Dead that plays like The Walking Dead on television. The waves are just unrealistic, and I wish it was a little slower paced.
This video pretty much sums it up

so.... you don't want left 4 dead is what you're saying

they added a campaign of pretty much the same length and changed up the combat with melee and all that other specialized item stuff (and completely replaced the gore system to compliment it)

At what point did it ever seem like it would be anything like that?

Here's some things I don't like about L4D2:
All of the ~nawlins~ styled music
Daytime
The change in sounds
If you're going to put in weapon upgrades, I'd expect more than two, both of which I can live without in-game
Way to break PC splitscreen for no reason, guys!
Dual pistols aren't even the same pistol
Broke Vocalize
Guns don't seem as satisfying to use for some reason imo
[sp]Bye, Bill! Hope you liked living![/sp]
etc
Whereas L4D1 had literally no problems imo. It was solid.
Basically, I guess it's aesthetics, my OCD, and the lack of fun non-intended things from L4D1 that made me not like it nearly as much.
In General L4D2 feels like it has a lot less polish, the textures look really low-res for even that time period (They even removed $detail for NO reason*)
The view models are terrible, same with the animations. I really recommend people L4D before they get L4D2.

literally nobody wants this except you

why would anyone want a drawn out melodrama with maybe a few zombies per map

in a video game

I LOVED L4D's viewmodels. I modded it into L4D2 but sadly it had too much bugs init.

Considering the game was derived from some guys at either Valve or Turtle Rock(I forget which)playing CS:S with like 4 players against a full team of bots with knives, why would you expect it to be ANYTHING like the Walking Dead Show? If you want The Walking Dead, play the Telltale game or that horrible Survival Instincts one.
I remember a pre-release L4D1 promo interview where Chet described it as "ultra-violent Mario Party" or something along those lines. It's not supposed to be a "scary horror game" per-se, just a fast fun multiplayer game with a horror-ish theme... if that makes sense.

I loved L4D's view models (Same with CS:S's), L4D2 (and CS:GO's beta) did a lot of stuff wrong.
One feature I would love to be carried over into the next L4D/whatever is CS:GO's beautiful (I want go hug whoever spearheaded this) mag dropping animation / system.

You're telling me. L4D2 had some wicked-irritating view models...
