Since you want it to be a coop game you could have the different lights represent the player's health and ammo a la Dead Space. Make the lights functional as well as decorative.

At the moment it's part of the gun, but I intend on splitting it up when we come to working on the upgrade system. I'll make some iron sights sometime.
