I just went and bought all 25 non-foil Guns of Icarus Online cards and crafted them all in a row

I don't even own that game

I would love to make a TWD or Bioshock Infinite badge, but I don't own either of them, and cards are 0,20 euro each at least.

You have to prioritize what badges you're going for. I specifically target games that have great emoticons and badges. If it's a poorly put together or lazy set (like The Walking Dead, Tomb Raider) I farm the cards and sell all of them on the market. Although the prices are low right now and the market ain't doing so hot, that can work in your favour too. Sell all of your shitty game cards (should be most of them) and buy up cards for the good games that you want.

Now if you own no games on Steam in addition to being a low level, yeah you're pretty screwed. You would have to spend money to get anywhere, or wait ungodly amounts of time.

I spend money only on the badges for the games I like, and for level upping as well. I just make badges higher level and slowly but level up.

I just sell off my cards as soon as I get them. I really don't care aside from the money I make off of them. Even then it's a tiny amount so whatevs.

I crafted my first badge yesterday, and it was for Revenge of the Titans.

I have since then spent all of the money in my Steam Wallet on more Revenge of the Titans cards, because there's only five of them. Even then, I've only got two badges.

It's driving me crazy trying to get money to buy more cards.

Just got a gift card for my birthday. Trying to decide whether or not going after the Summer foil badge would be worth it.

I got exactly one out of ten. I maxed out my regular summer badge, leaving me with all the emoticons but the plane.

You need all the cards from the HL2 set. There's 8 HL2 cards.

If you need only the background, just buy it. It costs much more less than cards needed for the set.

Maybe because the badges themselves aren't tradable so cards are the only way to obtain those PLUS cards give you all of those things. Cards have a chance to give more rare emoticons and backgrounds and again the badges like I said for aesthetics and XP on your profile as well as being nearly the only way to obtain showcases and more friends list slots (other than linking your Steam with Facebook which gives you +100 iirc)

Trading cards just give more benefit.
You get an emoticon and a background, and less tangible benefits, like the badge, and increased EXP, which brings with it more friend slots and a higher booster rate.

Cards usually have a shit chance to get bought if you even put them 1 or 2 cents above the lowest one availabe, so there's a 100% chance that yours will never get bought ever.
