All these games look extremely boring to me.
You don't know if you'll like it until you try it...
What should I try identify with money. Seems like books are the only ones worth identifying.
If you identify any scrolls, spellbooks, rods potions they'll be recognised the next time you pick one of them up. You have to identify them to check if they're blessed or cursed though, and equipment is usually identified.
You can read spellbooks scrolls, and zap rods to identify them as well but I prefer identifying them from the identifier.
I really want to play Elona but I don't know what the fuck to do most of the time and it's confusing. maybe if I had more of an attention span for roguelikes.

Play with the IRC open. The people there are usually willing to answer your questions.
IRC location can be found at elona wiki, which helps too.

I think Elona is one of the most involving roguelikes since there's more to it than "fight through the dungeon and claim the amulet of Yendor." Despite the fact that it's graphical, I don't really feel that it's a good place to start.
I actually think that Elona is a very good beginner's RL.
As pointed out somewhere up here, the only keys you need are the X, C and Z. As opposed to certain games where I pretty much couldn't play because I had a netbook without a keypad.

Well, maybe it's easier to control, but conceptually I think it's more difficult to grasp. You're basically dropped into the world with no immediately apparent direction, whereas in most other roguelikes it's a constant fight downwards into a dungeon.

Takes a while to get into, once you find a class that's good and fits you then you can do far more. Also playing a lot or going on the wiki and digging around for an item you really want and then work towards that.

This looks like great fun but I just can't figure out how to pull up the help it tells you to read... Herp just realized it's a PDF
Wow, 3069 has a 3D version, cool.
I played the 3D version for, like, 5 minutes. Then I grew a cancerous tumor in my eyes and decided to stop.
I think it might have been because of my laptop, though.
So what you're saying is the 3D one is bad and should never be played?
When I played it I played the 3d version and it's definitely nothing special though I didn't like the game much either, why should I bother building? Why should I bother finding doors to places when I can destroy walls every time. Also you can get really tough by buying health regen items.
As nobody else has.

A console roguelike released for the SNES in Japan and then re-released for the DS in all regions. A Nethack-inspired roguelike, with an emphasis on creative combat -- there are a lot of items with interesting abilities, such as the switching staff, a staff that switches your position with its target. Arguably a bit simpler than PC roguelikes, but incredibly well balanced and designed.[/release]
I even edited it to make it (a little) less biased and uninformative.
Added.

I think, like you mentioned earlier, Nethack should be the starting point. It's conceptually one of the easiest ones to play and very solid for beginners.
I'd even say IVAN would be good since it's inherently graphical and the controls are easy, but the game actively tries to kill you so I'd say no. It's also a lot about common sense; having a backpack of gunpowder and mines in your inventory are not things to wield while fighting fire imps. I say this out of experience :v:

I've barely played any IVAN, but that warning makes me want to play it.

FYI I believe it's possible to be instakilled in IVAN with no warning whatsoever, I seem to remember taking two steps into the first dungeon and having the ceiling collapse on me one time.

IVAN: Beat your enemies to death with your own severed arm.
Oh it's certainly hilariously frustrating. To be walking in a gigantic room filled with loot and suddenly get your foot stuck in a bear trap. Try to free yourself and the trap doesn't budge. Suddenly, you hear a blood curdling yell and a kamikaze dwarf runs into you and explodes. Miraculously you survive with all your limbs blown off. Quickly you pray to a random god but all they do is fill your stomach with food. Then three more dwarves simultaneously run into you. At least you died on a full stomach.
True story.
Another great story of mine is when I decided to use my lightning wand to zap lightning into a room filled with enemies. The lightning shot through the first enemy, bounced off the wall behind him, bounced off of a second wall, bounced off of a third wall, and then finally landed on the tile next to me. My character hadn't detected the trap that lay there when I walked by.
It was a mine. You can imagine what happened next.
[editline]4th May 2011[/editline]
Most of my deaths are centered around explosives as you can tell. I've got a serious problem with hoarding mines and gunpowder backpacks thinking they may be useful in sticky situations. It causes a majority of my deaths.
Oh god I must play this game.
I was just on the second level of a new game, and randomly a wand exploded right in front of me, taking out a 9x9 tile area and setting me and all my things on fire.

I survived until this happened a few turns later;

Once I started a new game, took 3 steps forward, slipped on a banana peel and impaled myself on my own sword.
Started playing, found a lantern straight off. Wielded it until my lantern skill was like 6 and my unnamed or something skill was 3 then I got my left leg broken off and found a dagger. Later I drank from a fountain, lost my left arm so now I only have my right appendages left...
