Also, check this out.

Looks like it would be really fun, if it ever comes out. Unfortunately, looks rather dead at the moment.
If bay12 was working on it you think it wouldn't die so quickly.
I just hope it's not graphical only if it does get release, I really can't stand graphical roguelikes. I suppose I could if they had animation but just watching blocky static images move around and try to form a coherent dungeon doesn't do it for me, I love ASCII.
Looks pretty good to me;

But it looks like you're viewing it from the side and the top at the same time and that really irks me.
ASCII looks a lot cleaner and simple.
That being said there definitely should be an option for either one, because it should be there for people who do want graphical tiles.
I'm pretty okay with it to be honest, it's all about gameplay anyway, the whole I don't care about graphics thing extends both ways with me.
I'd just be really happy if it got done. I'm guessing there's an active thread on Bay 12 for it, or something.
Found Elona on my computer so I started playing it again.
I got killed by a "w‹°•|‚Ì‚à‚Ìx" in "–qê"
[editline]29th May 2011[/editline]
My character has now completely lost it...
I've been itching for a new roguelike lately. After going through the thread I think I have to try out Ivan and perhaps Stone Soup.
The only ones I've played in this thread are Dwarf Fortress (REGARDLESS of whether you think it deserves to be in the thread), Elona, Nethack, and Powder
Also played DoomRL but it's so simplistic I think it barely counts. It feels more like a demonstration of a concept than a full-blown roguelike game.
Oh and I tried a couple times to play Incursion, but I could hardly make heads or tails of it.
I'm an avid Transcendence player, but I'm not sure if I'd call it a rougelike. It's more of a top-down space action game with heavy RPG elements.

Spelunky

Download
A fast-paced cave exploration rougelike where the goal of the game is to get as much treasure from the cave as possible. Items, monsters, cave layout and so on are all randomly generated each time you play each level. [/release]
I don't think it's debatable that Spelunky is not a roguelike. It's a platformer that took inspiration from roguelikes, like the possibility of sudden deaths, randomly generated environments, and randomly appearing rare equipment.
But it is still very good, and very difficult. I've managed to unlock everything in the game (doing a run where 8 damsels are saved, doing a run in under 10 minutes, etc.) and in the 300+ times I've played, I've beaten it 10-11.

Oh, so I got started on Ivan. In my first life, I got poisoned by a spider and then finished off by a mushroom.
Next life I tried to throw something past my dog, but he got mad at me and bit me in the dick. My character panics, so I start running around the dungeon, and another mushroom hits me in the dick. I died.
On my third life I got all the way through that first dungeon, and I just saved and quit after talking to the guy in town. What do I do when I'm low on food? I bought some bananas from the shop, but I'll be out of money soon. I didn't even realize I was gathering money as I went along. Where was it coming from?
I can't see everything in the screen for 3059, anyone know a fix?

Just eat shit. Mushroom corpses are fun because they give all crazy sort of effects. I'd avoid zombies (for obvious reasons) and goblins. Most other things should be relatively safe to eat, well as safe as anything else in IVAN is. Meat golems are the best especially if you manage to sever a limb or two.

I thought you were insulting me for a moment.
I put on a ring of polymorph and soon transformed into a female carnivorous mutant bunny. Am I ever going to change back?
[editline]30th May 2011[/editline]
Never mind, I just stepped on a mine. Then my wand of fireballs exploded.
That was a good run otherwise. My first score was 33, my next one was 16, and this most recent score was 975. Very nice.
My friend and I may be developing a roguelike.
Maybe.
Hopefully.

Oh haha, I wasn't trying to insult. I literally meant just eat whatever you can find.
I don't really like the ASCII visuals, but thanks to this thread I know some tile games that I need to try out.
I just killed a magical mushroom, should I eat it?
I ate it. Levitated for a while.
Then I walked into the pink spores of some other magical mushrooms, and I currently have Polycontrol, Telecontrol, and Invisibility. Shrooms are awesome man
fuuuuuuuck I just ate a shitload of magic mushrooms and now I'm a giant spider. wat do
I can't play 3059 because it offsets my screen and the monitor controls can't fix it enough.

A giant invisible physic spider.
Only in roguelikes.

DiabloRL
[img_thumb]http://diablo.chaosforge.org/images/6.png[/img_thumb]
DiabloRL is a roguelike 'demake' of Diablo. It was originally developed for the 7-day roguelike competition, and as such was made in seven days. Features four classes, quests, etc.

Most ASCII rougelikes will eventually have downloadable tilesets if they're popular enough.
Is graphical tiles something people really look for in a roguelike? If so we might have to make the option for them one of the project goals.
I was going on the best Ivan run ever. I ran into a ghost of my previous life, acquiring a 5-10 damage ommel hair whip, bronze plate mail that was 8 AV, and steel boots that were 9 AV each. Also found a helmet that increased my perception by 2 or 3, and about 3 carrots increasing perception even more. The helmet had 19 AV somehow, which was just plain ridiculous. Nothing could harm me. Then I found a genie who served me with a two-handed arcanite scimitar, and basically decimated everything he touched.
I got into the gloomy cave
Spotted some steel plate mail on the ground, which I'd been eying at the shop, but cost 1400+ gold
Noticed a land mine at my feet
Tried to move
Mine exploded
Lightning wand in my backpack exploded.
Fuck.
I decided to draw a little something about my Ivan experience.

A true roguelike player isn't satisfied by only throwing his weapon, you must unequip all your armor and throw them too to hit the enemy at least once.
I would have, but I was too panicked. I couldn't attack anything, so I just had to run around the tunnels, pretty much at random
GTA roguelike? That's a brilliant idea. I wonder why nobody thought of it sooner?

You have to use your imagination.
