How do you even make things look steampunk in Minecraft :v:
Closest thing to steampunk in Minecraft is Redstone and pistons, but they still are not at all very reminiscent of typical steampunk things.

With the right texture pack you're pretty close. Just look at FyreUK, they used DokuCraft and it looked great imo.

Well, what's the point of trying to build a steampunk city in minecraft if you have to use a pack that makes everything look steampunk?
I personally don't want to have to rely on texture packs for people to be able to see what my creations are supposed to look like, to me that completely defeats the purpose of trying to create something with a theme.

Besides, Minecraft's time period really does not support Steampunk well.
Minecraft is mostly Medieval, while steampunk is mostly the Victorian era. There's no cogs and gears, no bolts, no exhaust pipes, no steam, and no top hats.
Steampunk or not, airships are always a cool thing to put in a minecraft city. Personally, i just think of them as fantasy things rather than steampunk.
regardless, a medieval-ish city with some sort of twist to it would probably be the easiest thing to build.
I personally would like a stereotypical Arabian theme. Medieval sounds easy enough, but a bit bland.

eh.
i'd still prefer the floating island jail idea.
I'm fine with that too, just making suggestions :v:

Gold and iron blocks, wooden planks for flooring in smaller areas, large paynes of glass remnisicient of cathedrals, and gold-copper tubing EVERYWHERE.
I still don't think it would work. Minecraft is all wood and stone technology. There's very little metal things in minecraft to work with.
A pretty basic wall design, easy and fast to make, and in my opinion, not bad.

so i just got an idea, how about a city based on archetechture from all of europe itself? a huge clock tower, tons of houses with red rooves, all together with little space between them, bigger buildings with huge decorations on them, large pointed tops... it'd be perfect!
it would also make sence of the city walls.
To list all my summed up concerns, because I really want to see this project take off:
1) It has been proven that if you get a project going that doesn't have a clearly defined hierarchy, it will fail. Maybe not right off the bat, but somewhere along the lines from start to finish.
Ans: Choose 1 or 2 people to be in charge. Obviously not dictatorially in charge, but they'd have input on everything and maybe the final say. To have this, they'd have to be extremely experienced and talented builders, I'd argue the two best, assuming the best of whoever wants to join this project aren't total dicks.
2) It's really blunt, but not everyone is a good builder. You can certainly build anything you can imagine with really crappy builders helping, but the very best the project can be is determined by the very worst builder. I'd argue you need to have the builders for this project screened.
Ans: Select your initial hierarchical leaders. Have a contest. Depending on the number of contestants who bother finishing the contest, and the average quality, choose a small number of veteran builders, and then choose a slightly larger number of normal builders. If there aren't enough people with work you'd actually consider good, then that is that. Don't pick more people just because you want more people, or don't want to be a dick. That will ruin the project just as fast as having Hitlers for leaders of the project. That would be the hierarchy. Leader -> Veteran builder -> builder.
3) Everyone has their own building styles, and their own things they want to build. If this will work, you need everyone working on it to be content. As such, beyond having the leaders input actually mean something, I think you need to make sure everyone joining this project understands that they may not get to build what they want for some time, assuming the group even lasts long enough.
Ans: Have the leaders actually dedicated to building, and deeply enjoy doing it, beyond just because they are talented at it. This gives a solid support base for the other team members, and makes leading the group easier.
4: Server. I still consider this a problem because who ever provides the server may attempt to hijack the entire purpose of this project, assuming it is to build awesome shit. If this isn't the purpose any longer, than ignore most of what this post contains. But, if it is to build awesome shit, I'd suggest making sure the server host understands the project from the get go.
5: Mods. First off, ya need an experienced server host who knows how to make mods work together, and might do a bit of java coding, or at least understand the basics. Also, doesn't mind trying to help with the mods breaking and such instead of just saying they are always "busy" and don't actually do anything once the server is hosted.
6: What is the point of ending this at a megabuild? Why not just create a really tight-knit group that works well together and then build more than one creation.
7: Just to point it out, you can build a city that spans 2,000 blocks by 2,000 blocks, which would be massive. But, if everything looks incredibly simple, dull, and plain, then thats all it will be. A very large city that is simple, dull, and plain. You're gonna need to have people that can actually design details and know how to make things look nice.
To list all my summed up concerns, because I really want to see this project take off: -stuff-
Frankly, limiting the player count to a select few and having them become very tightly knit defeats the purpose of making this a 'Facepunch' megabuild. I feel that to make it fun for everyone we should, yes, have a few leaders in charge of architectural direction, but allow a good amount of people to help out. If any particular builder does not seem to be quality, just have them removed. I don't really think a competition is in order to find out who can help. However, maybe others disagree, that's just my 2 cents.

Which is why, if we want to keep our builds varied, we need to be willing to make effective use of texture packs. As you say, it's all wood and stone, so what do we do when we're done with Norse halls and Medieval castles? Those are all well and good, but if we're only going to build things like that because we can't see the point in changing the way the game itself looks, then I'm afraid I might be working with the wrong group.
I'm just saying, if we're going to limit ourselves like this, what's the point in building if it all looks the same?

I think that we should let anyone who wants to build help, but if they're terrible at following instuctions or fuck up the builds too much, we should have them removed.
what do you guys think of my idea?
I love the idea of a 'European' esque city that Megaguy posted about. I've always liked the idea of cramped conditions, yet having a massive cathedral structure somewhere in the center- towering above the rest of the houses.

Yeah, it sounds easy enough for a first build. We'll only need to build one super-epic sized thing (the cathedral, or whatever else will be in the center), so it shouldn't take too long, but still look pretty good.
Please,please,please,underground city/town
Take a normal MC world and TNT a big hole/cave into the ground, with a little of it being open to the air
Don't flatten the ground and build across it,build onto and into the sides of the cave
I volunteer rasta to help, and me I guess.
why did you link me this thread, inacio?
why did you link me this thread, inacio?
because hes making this happen I guess
I am rather looking forward to this now!
Don't worry I got this.
I mean, I'd be happy to help. :v:
Personally I think instead of a big ben, we have a giant statue of me that tells time.

It's not GRAND enough.
It needs to be MILLIONS of times taller.
Well actually just taller.
I'd like to see this happen, and I'll help if possible.

I'm in.
If we haven't chosen a theme yet, I suggest something like This. As far as I know, nothing like it has been attempted before so it would be interesting to try.
If you ask me, I'd like to participate in a huge underground city thing (but no digging, the map must consist of a huge caves and nothing else).
I think European is the decided theme.
