I've decided I'll let the lung fish fight with some goblins in a gladiator prisoners arena... The thing is, I want to launch them into the arena with a bridge catapult, but I can't build the cages on the bridge... so how else can I place them on the bridge for launching?

I don't know how people find military training so hard. You just got to think smart. Let your melee dwarves only finish of remnants of sieges/ambushes that were devastated by crossbowdwarves or traps. Soon they can take full battles, with support from crossbows and siege weapons. Then later on they can finish off entire sieges without a scratch. The problem I have with danger rooms is that it doesn't make sense, blocking the same wooden spear over and over with your sword won't teach you to swing a sword. Same thing with aquifers, which forces you to break physics to breach them.
Speaking of militias, I found a helpful guide on how to set them up: (thumbed for hugeness) [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/glPVP.jpg[/thumb]

Well, one of my miners died of thirst. Got beat up by my mason when he was in a tantrum, fractured her liver and broke a rib. Didn't have any water underground, all surface water froze...
What traps do you people use? Like, is a cage with an animal, sourrounded by weapon traps effective? and where do you lay out your traps in relation to the entrance of your fort? And what do you load your weapon traps with?

My fortress only has copper and silver. I'm going to die to the first goblin ambush.
My fortress only has copper and silver. I'm going to die to the first goblin ambush.
Silver is still good for hammering goblin skulls into mash, and you can still make darts out of the copper.
My fortress only has copper and silver. I'm going to die to the first goblin ambush.
Make traps and a drawbridge in the fort entrance, and set up a burrow. You could just fuck it and make a thousand traps too.
I think a giant toad jumped into some magma. I have announcements of it interrupting my dwarves, them punching it, dogs attacking it, ect. But I can't find it anywhere, no corpse. It's on the deceased list. It all happened near a magma pipe, so...
Devlog
Sewer ramps and crossings, sewer elevation issues. A bridge problem came up that left the city walls empty... now I'm working on a dungeon room that's getting pinched down to nothing. And sock-wearing kobolds that have little coats and caps for some reason. Adventurers in world gen go down into the dungeons and sometimes run into trouble, and there are criminal gangs down there, and hopefully that'll be enough to get objects down there for you to find. The fewer spontaneously generated objects the better, but we'll make concessions for now if they are too boring.
Sounds awesome
Oh man, the thought of kobolds running around with socks, coats, and caps on is great.
It'll be even better to strangle one with his own sock.
It'll be even better to strangle one with his own sock.
But how can you kill the adorable kobolds, directly? It's too cruel! So much better to keep a kobold colony in your fighting pit / arena.
But how can you kill the adorable kobolds, directly? It's too cruel! Seriously, when I told my cousin that a new DF update is in the works the first thing he said was "What, does it introduce new ways to horribly kill kittens?". At first I objected, but then realized he was right.
I'll just leave this here.
what? [editline]14th December 2011[/editline] also, what's better if I got to choose. Deep metals and shallow metal OR Deep metal and shallow metals?
Cutebolds.
what? [editline]14th December 2011[/editline] also, what's better if I got to choose. Deep metals and shallow metal OR Deep metal and shallow metals?
Shallow metals. More likely to get iron in the sedimentary layers.
Thanks for the info Orkel  [editline]14th December 2011[/editline] I am sure I found both deep and shallow metals somewhere, too bad I lost track of it.
I always spare Kobold thieves because I'm a softy for Kobolds. I let them bask in rotting goblin remains.
yes! I found a spot with both shallow and deep metals, it's in the desert though I think. [editline]14th December 2011[/editline] oh and flux stone
I always spare Kobold thieves because I'm a softy for Kobolds. I let them bask in rotting goblin remains.
Master of ethics [editline]14th December 2011[/editline] Oh boy, caught a lil o' magma crab. I modded a number of beasts a bit to be tameable, so he is now part of my little rare creature pen. I think I modded them to breed too, but I am no sure. [editline]14th December 2011[/editline] And a toothless dragon shows up. It's only year 137, so he's a baby. A big, blood filled, baby.
Cutebolds are bestbolds.
Devlog Sounds awesome
If they weren't officially cutebolds before, they sure are now.
I like to think of these as little souvenirs I give to tired merchants. :3
is it wrong if I make a new fortress every day?
