so apparently a stray kitten just adopted my carpenter what?
carpenter took the cat as his pet. It sounds odd I know.
Toady likes cats so cats are superior in the game, they adopt people, people don't adopt them.
Cats make for excellent dwarven cave explorers.
There's nothing worse than having a single freshly made squad of military dwarves, half-equipped with crappy copper weaponry and armor when suddenly 2 sieges happen in a row. :( What's a good population count to begin building up a military? I always seem to do it far too late.
I generally grab a few of the migrants in the first spring, though embarking with a military dwarf is very common, or giving the miner and woodcutter different military skills or something. A miner being an axedwarf and a hunter who doubles up as a marksdwarf can start a military well, when you want to. Of course, you might get a migrant swordsdwarf or something - you've just gotta use what you get. Hah, just realised that it's mid-summer, and my liason's still not reached my expedition leader. My expedition leader's a miner who's been kept busy all year. I've had a consistant 0-1 idle dwarf up 'til spring, and it's now only 5-6 of my 40. Wonder what happens when I have 2 liasons at once...
Cats make for excellent dwarven cave explorers.
And biscuits
I've got a goblin in a cage, and soldiers. How do i designate him to DIE?
that feel when you have an entire caravan just drop into a pit...
that feel when you have an entire caravan just drop into a pit...
"HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH"
"HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH"
problem is you have to time it really well (have to hope a dwarf hits the lever in time, and then theres the delay..), so it's all the more satisfactory. I put my lever in the main meeting hall where there's always dwarfs though so that isn't usually too big an issue, but have had some very close calls where it looked like they crossed the bridge entirely, then still fell in somehow
Okay, just had my first strange mood. The dwarf's asking for bones, and I have some skeletons out in my refuse pile. How would I go about turning those skeletons into usable bones for my moody dwarf?

Huge selection of bone things to make

They will probably lack armor and dodge though so don't expect them to last out long.
so i've been playing since about 4:30 it's currently 11:20 yup, about 7 hours in one day. I miss games that used to get me this involved, other than skyrim, this is the only game this year that i've played for so long in one sitting
Goddamn, this is so confusing, but so fun.
Oh Mr Mayor, you go banning me from exporting armour stands? I don't want to export them anyway, but I'm half considering a little accident... Been waiting over 1 dorf year for my magma river to fill up my forges. The stream finally reached them a few minutes ago, but I think it's gonn take another hour or so to actually fill to 5/7 or whatever it is to guarentee smelting. (I'll take 7/7, perfectly) Issue is, I've not got any good metal (got copper, but no tin for bronze) and no traps, as my glassmakers (got a lvl 15 one in migrant waves, so time for serrated disks...) As to the bone crafts, try slaughtering an animal, the butchers will get rid of the meat, and the strange mooder should run off and grab the bones. Argh, I'm starting to doubt if my 1wide magma corridoor will work, I might have to dig another one, and loose another dorf to the sheer wall of magma, whilst making another magma river to fill it up.
Do animals(ala goslings) grow up to be adult geese if they are all stuck inside a cage?
They should grow, but I don't think that they can breed.
so I haven't played this in awhile, but is it still possible to capture dragons with wooden cages? :v:
They should grow, but I don't think that they can breed.
All i needed since there is abaut 50 of them walking araund and i need them to grow up.
so I haven't played this in awhile, but is it still possible to capture dragons with wooden cages? :v:
Yes and that's why cage traps are broken
You shake around the Druchii Lowborn by his lower body, spilling his reeking guts!
I love adventuring as a Champion of Khorne. [editline]16th December 2011[/editline] Ohohoho I entered a house and there are like 10 of those Dark Elves. Christmas has come early. I'm maiming 5 Dark Elves while I shake the sixth one by the throat with my mouth.
At the risk of sounding like a newby baby dwarf, would anyone happen to have a link to a good tutorial and tile set? I played DF for about a week once, but it was ages ago and I'm relatively certain that if I started playing again, I'd just be completely lost.
Okay, just had my first strange mood. The dwarf's asking for bones, and I have some skeletons out in my refuse pile. How would I go about turning those skeletons into usable bones for my moody dwarf?
Skeletons cannot be butched into bones. Kill a fresh animal.

I played DF for about a week once, but it was ages ago and I'm relatively certain that if I started playing again, I'd just be completely lost.
Sure, there's loads of good tutorials. We like expanding our elitist ranks. Right, first off we have the Lazy Newb Pack - an insanely useful collection of utilities, along with the game prepackaged with a few tilesets and the like. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=59026.0 Then, there's the Complete and Utter Newbie Tutorial to DF. It's outdated, but a good text guide, still. http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/02/09/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-1-wtf/ Then, youtube channels have the best tutorials. Psisyndicate has some nice ones - probably some of the most recent. http://www.youtube.com/user/PsiSyndicate CptDuck has some older videos, and newer ones. He's good. http://www.youtube.com/user/captnduck Also, Revocane, 51ppycup (might be spelt wrong), Quill18 (IIRC), Plumphelmentpunk, PerochialJoe, JuryDutySummons (is a good one IIRC) and a load more (I've forgotten someone important) all have good tutorials. I often have one on in the background, as a nice sound buffer. (I like listening to LPs just for the voices that some have) I'd love to write a guide like the Complete and Utter Newbie Tutorial, but I'm not really good enough at the game, lack dedication, and have exams :v: Also, should be new version soon.
all the tutorial series are quite good, but I feel that too many of them just... drag on too much, they really should cover how to get a fortress actually started in the first video I think, that'd definitely help a lot of people get past the initial barrier I feel, part of the reason I only just started playing a few days ago is because all the tutorials I found just took way to long to get through psisyndicates is the closest that i've found but he still manages to drag on a bit.. though I suppose you have too in order to actually explain how things work, kind of considering making a really basic tutorial series that could just get players into the game without having to listen for too long, but I probably wouldn't explain things well enough [editline]17th December 2011[/editline] because really, I'm pretty sure I could explain how to get a functional fortress within 10-15 minutes that wont collapse from food/drink shortage, have a self sustaining farm that doesn't run out (don't know if any of the tutorial series actually covered that, psi syndicate taught me how to start a farm but i'd always run out of plump helmet spawn, though thanks to you guys I realize the fix for that is really simple) could go into detail about things after getting the player in so to speak..
killing them is more fun though.. edit: and also doesn't require deconstructing/reconstructing
Just seize all their goods in the trading window.
Just seize all their goods in the trading window.
you can't do that with some traders i've found, it might be because I didn't have any militia or something though
I got clay in my area and red sand, does red sand count as sand for glass?
