Just found an old fort on an old external HD of mine. Dwarf fortress version 38c, fort name Gulfclasp.
I remember that fort.
I decided to dig a long, 1 tile wide pit to be used for throwing goblin prisoners and kittens into.
First victims: two legendary +3 miners who were digging the channel. ffs
I used to play a coupple of years ago and decided to try again. Wich one is the best graphic "mod"?
Alright, so... Masterwork mod removes training spears. I thought I'd try wooden spikes in a danger room instead.
Did not end well.

I will take a look at that! Thanks!
so, after experiencing my first siege, my fortress tantrum spiraled, so I abandoned it. It so happens that some merchants and a trade liaison were there when I did. But I liked the location, so I tried reclaiming it, and they're still here. this is confusing.
[editline]6th January 2012[/editline]
also, there's some goblins in the unit list, but they're friendly.
Oh wow my dorfs just went up against a plains titan, a giant tarantula with 3 eyes.
It was my first encounter with a titan ever and it went really well, only one casualty which was a hunter who was killed before the military could reach the titan, though he did put up a good fight, dodging about a hundred of the Titans attacks and hitting it with some iron bolts.
Other than that there were two injuries, someones arm was injured and another persons back tooth was ripped out.
Is there anyway i can butcher the corpse of this titan?
[editline]7th January 2012[/editline]
actually it was the same dwarf with both of those injuries
Decided to give this a shot again with one of those fancy tilesets.
Before I even know how to navigate properly a giant badger slaughters my only fisherman scattering his limbs all over the place.
Decided to build my fort above an underground river.
Next thing I know, skeletal elephants are climbing up through it because they fell in a river above ground that somehow connected to it just right to have them come up in farm plots and murder the shit out of every single dorf.
:(
Those poor elephants, being washed down a river.

Such is life in Dwarf Fortress.
Are Cloth bags supposed to require a 10000 plant cloth?
That seems rather much for a bag.

I miss the actual underground rivers. Chasms too...
Wow, miners are fucking hardcore. Their combat stat is Mining, and you can level Mining ultra-easily. Thus, if you outfit them in proper armor, anything that attacks them is going to be a meaty paste before your actual military gets them.

It's not a bug, it's a workaround.
Basically, things like suturing and bandaging don't need a whole cloth unit, so it's done in parts.
One "Pig Tail Cloth" or "Pig Tail Thread" is actually 10000 units of it. It's basically how the hospital manages stuff.

Miners also build up a mountain of muscle from their mining, so that's another thing in their favour. Some people like to swap miners around, so that all of the military have been bulked up by mining.

I noticed how badass miners were just a hour ago, I had one of my miners to fish (I make them gather food when not mining) and he got jumped by one of those damn bastard attacking fish.
He smacked it with his pick and it splattered into multiple pieces :v:
Also I almost made it through the winter on my first try, is this a good sign? (read: not as in I got wiped out already, still going.)
I am so becoming a vampire and slowly draining an entire city when the new version comes out.
Oh dear god, I've just been thinking about lye.
You know it's used in soapmaking and stuff?
Well, if it was made into a liquid like water or magma... it would be a brutal weapon, or a sickening trap. It's a strong alkaline substance.
That's basically the same as chucking your enemies into bleach, which seems rather dorfy to me.

I can just imagine hiding out in a shed and climbing around the city at night, ducking through windows and eating people one by one.
any simple version of this game? or a good tutorial for first starter?

The Complete and Utter Newby Tutorial (outdated, but some of it's useful)
http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/02/09/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-1-wtf/
Psisyndicate posted this on facepunch a while back, it's new and good.

Captain Duck has tutorials that are good, too. The original ones are a bit outdated, but he's got a 2 hour one for 2011 IIRC.

And the Lazy Newb Pack, a very useful tool.

I liked using the Complete and Utter Newby Tutorial to understand the basics, but Psisyndicate was probably one of the most useful ones that I saw. The best way to learn it is to try a lot and fail, but the wiki's really useful too. Being a sandbox, there's no "right" way to play, in that you could bring a tonne of food and 7 miners or a butcher, 6 soldiers and 100 chickens. Oh, and you'll want to get the lazy newb pack - it has the game bundled with major tilesets and several utilities like Dwarf Therapist.

Just post them here.
I built a 3x3 downward stairway, but when I try to designate an upward stairway directly underneath it on the lower floor my miners do not build it..
