Real graphics are for babies. And not dwarf babies either. Elf babies. With diseases.
So, my dungeon master (Masterwork re-adds them) is having a tantrum because of a "lesser's pretentious burial arrangement".
No one except other nobles even has an assigned tomb. They just get a bunch of coffins in some random room. She gets a gold sarcophagus. She's beating up random dogs and she destroyed her own tomb in one of her tantrums.
I hope she gets eaten by a dragon.

She now demands that I make a crocodile bone table. I'm going to kill her.
I threw some kittens down my newly made magma express lane, and in a last attempt to do some good for the fortress, discovered adamantine. Praise the kittens!
Aaaand my last two legendary miners accidentally dug the ground under them in an effort to see the adamantine firsthand. They fell into the great magma sea. fuuuuuuck.
Anyone got some advice on what I should do with all these rocks?
Its like everywhere I mine I leave a trail of pieces of rock behind, despite of them really annoying me (I like tidy fortresses) around everybody stops with whatever they should be doing to haul rocks.
Not to mention my huge outdoor storage is full now and I'll have to dig a new rock storage, but since nearly every piece I mine drops a new rock I don't think it will help me much.
Just mark them as hidden ([d][b][h]) instead of building a stone stockpile. It looks the same, but your dwarves won't have to do anything.

You have the buttons for going up and down z-levels mixed up. You're trying to build up stairways in the air above your down stairways.
Does anyone know how to make a bridge over a larger river?
After last winter 4 of my dwarfs got stuck behind a river and almost started a tantrum spiral.

Just build floor over it? Unless it's festering with foul animals like carp, the dwarves should be easily able to cross the river.
Last night, my fortress was suddenly ambushed by elves. I hadn't checked, but apparently the dwarven civilization was in war with elves. It was summer of second year, and I hadn't built up a proper militia yet, so I just had a bunch of hauler sla- I mean peasants drafted to the army with no weapons or proper training, and made them wrestle the ~20 elves to death.
Luckily, only one of the elves was a markself. Rest were swordselves. Elves with wooden swords. They all died.

bCf to build a floor over it or bg for a proper retractable bridge.
umkh resize it, and wadsx change the direction a bridge can be pulled.
So a forgotten beast appeared in one of my underground caverns. It cant reach me so it's just wandering around on this small island that is surrounded by a pit.
I'm half tempted to mine over to it but at the same time I'm worried that might be too much Fun.
How difficult are forgotten beasts in comparison to Titans? Because my military has taken out two titans now with no difficulty. (I have a military of around 20)

Depends entirely on the beast, It might just spew gas in evry direction knocking evrything or do something less horrible.
Great to see the thread is so active!
I would like to be added to the list of players, thanks.

Is there any way to find out what it will do? It says it is pulsing rythmically which sounds ominous
It's a Beat Beast
It will blow your dorf's eardrums with some funky fresh beats
Are you guys going to go ape shit if I say that I'm going to use mods without playing vanilla first?

Only in Dwarf Fortress will you read these two posts next to one another and see absolutely nothing ethically or morally wrong with them.
Are you guys going to go ape shit if I say that I'm going to use mods without playing vanilla first?
Depends. Tilesets and "expanded vanilla" mods are perfectly fine.
My Little Pony Fortress mods aren't...
Okay... so for probably the 6th time I'm reinstalling DF.
I wonder how unsuccessful I'll be this time?
Since my last attempt, I've been playing a lot of roguelikes so the whole control scheme/interface is 2nd nature now. So hopefully I'll actually have more success. What should my short-term/long-term goals be?
[editline]9th January 2012[/editline]
also can someone rererere-explain to me what you want in an embark location?
I personally only look for no aquifer, little forest and a brook to fish in and not get eaten by carps.
Okay. So I don't really need to pay much attention to the minerals or anything?
Also some weird annoying bug is taking place where my esc does nothing so I can't press "esc to continue" right at the start. Any ideas?

Find a place with both deep metals and shallow metals.
Metals. Not metal.
[editline]9th January 2012[/editline]
Try pressing space
Ah I seem to have gotten past the screen.
[editline]9th January 2012[/editline]
Last time I tried playing I found I spent like 20 minutes just looking for an embark point with a certain kind of stone and no aquifer, because a guide told me to. :(

Use the "F" key to filter locations.
Use the "F" key to filter locations.
Genius. I swear this feature wasn't in last time I played!
[editline]9th January 2012[/editline]
Yeah my esc key is being incredibly screwy. And space has no effect either. May try a reinstall.
[editline]9th January 2012[/editline]
yeah a reinstall seems to have fixed it. how strange.
Oh shoot I didn't know I had to assign coffins to dwarfs via the Q menu.
Well lesson learned after a ghost just slapped my legendary sworddwarf, breaking his spine, legs, and longs causing him to suffocate before he even reached the hostpital.
You don't have to assign coffins, mate, unless you've designated them as tombs. You should just be able to place a coffin and enable it for burial. (then disable bury pets)
Nobles are really the only ones who want tombs.
I keep having ideas about a TV show about dwarf fortress. It's kind of cartoony but also really violent, like Happy Tree Friends. In different episodes the show is run by a different person because the fortress always experiences Fun at the end of each episode. It'll have all the fun antics about DF like forgotten beasts and tantrum spirals!
[editline]9th January 2012[/editline]
It would work for almost any violent game, like Space Station 13 or The Ship.

I remember one of my dwarfs went berserk once, so I had my militia commander punch him to death. I thought trying to kill everyone was kind of a dick move, so I didn't bury him, I just left his body out in the forest to rot.
Later, he came back as a ghost and tore my carpenter's hand off.

I have numerous animals in cages, what is the best way to slaughter them for my butcher? I dont really want to build a cage, then hook it up to a lever, then kill it with my military. Is there another way? will a spiked pitfall work?
[thumb]http://i.imgur.com/Yyacd.jpg[/thumb]
If only that actually worked for Dwarf Fortress.
