I think you can avoid having them escape if you keep the pit within 1 distance of the animal stockpile so they instanly get thrown into the pit.
Nope. Some still escape.

My military does not want to train. Any ideas? I have a barracks and have two squads set up. They won't train though
Also, whats the best way to meet the road value for becoming the capital? Im considering paving a road of electrum to get near the value.
My military does not want to train. Any ideas? I have a barracks and have two squads set up. They won't train though
They they active? (m > a) Are they set to train in the barracks? (Q on whatever you have set > t on the squads)
They they active? (m > a) Are they set to train in the barracks? (Q on whatever you have set > t on the squads)
Thank you so much! Edit:They still aren't training.
Edit:They still aren't training.
When you use q and scroll over the barracks, are they assigned to train in that room? Are your military alerts set to train all year round?
Thank you so much! Edit:They still aren't training.
Did you make sure their schedule isn't set to train with 10 people minimum?
I finally fixed it! Thank you everyone who helped me out. Also a Dwarf just carved a engraving of an Elf hero... Time to lock him in a room with no food.
Is it more practical to let dorfs take whatever they want for military equipment, or specify each and every piece? I used to specify each piece, that way they don't decide to take random shit mid-battle, but it is extremely tedious, and I'm wondering if its necessary. Weapons I specify anyway because of different skills, but I'm talking armor/shields.

I only assign weapons after a couple sieges have weeded out the weaklings. About half of my fortress' armor consists of Goblinite.
When I thought the badger season was over; Badgermen While YOU have to deal with goblins, cutebolds and demons, I have to deal with friggin' badgers! Fuck. Zombie badgers.
That frustration when you use DFHack to reveal your map and there is 0 lignite and 0 bit. coal. [editline]24th January 2012[/editline] And the only magma pipe is 100 blocks away
I was looking for the magma pipe all over the map and one of my dwarves recently found it...right beneath my main hall...by caving-in a piece of ceiling that he stood on and falling right through the floor into the magma pipe, with lethal consequences for his and his cat. Dwarves.

Devlog
I visited a tomb today as the adventurer Cadem Renownletter to see how well the game retains the position of skeletons and treasures as I move them around. During the process, a mummy boxed me in the ribs, broke my finger, bit my hand and shook it around until the hand came off. The mummy then animated the hand and they both attacked me. The hand scored the killing scratch, earning the name "Drippedsieged, Cadem Renownletter's left hand" and earning the tomb an additional defender against further testing. Its middle finger is still broken.
Daaaaaaamn, that's awesome. I like Adventure Mode more than Fortress Mode and it's about time people like me got some love.

I can't seem to get a Baron even though I meet all the requirements. [editline]24th January 2012[/editline] Oh wow, the mayor mandated I make 3 steel items right after I just made 3 steel items.
How can I mod the game so that one wood gives more than one charcoal?
How can I mod the game so that one wood gives more than one charcoal?
Unfortunately after looking into the raws, I found no way that would be possible, it apparently operates on something that's not easily moddable. However, you can always make it so burning 1 unit of lignite gives you, say, 4 units of coal, while bituminous coal gives you 6 units.
Oh god this game is really punishing So after I barely held off the first goblin siege, I'd figure they wouldn't be back for a while so I could recover. But no, before I even buried the 100 corpses another huge siege was on my doorstep and I got massacred. In other news I started a new fort and my cat went on a rampage killing 43 rats and adopting a miner.
How can I mod the game so that one wood gives more than one charcoal?
I dont know why youd need to, unless you have a severe shortage of trees on your map. Either request it from the dorf laision along with lots of wood, and/or employ 3 wood burners full time in your meeting hall.
I lost my fort to a tantrum spiral due to goblins siege. No problems (besides a miner burning to death in lava but that's par for the course) up until that point, had a draw bridge at the entrance and everything. Suddenly, goblins already inside my fort. Ok there's five, I have 6 military, we might be ok. NOPE. Second ambush, now 11 goblins, 5 seconds after the first. Military gets wiped out without dealing any real damage, gobos invade the main hall and start killing people. Then my legendary miner (had another one but he got gang banged) and my expert miner started wrecking their shit. Legendary miner got stabbed in the lung, then proceeded to break every bone in his attacker's body. Expert miner was even more impressive. He avoided/parried every attack thrown at him (was being attacked by 3 goblins at once) and broke limbs left and right. At the end of the day the goblins ran with half their numbers slain by mostly the miners. But considering the population of 50 was reduced to 20 by that time, tantrum spiral was unavoidable.
Just started a new outpost in some god-forsaken freezing forest. Pickriddles. We specialize in coffin and casket production. Gabbro coffins, pine caskets, you name it and we'll build it for you. We also export items crafted from the remains of sasquatches and racoons. They're everywhere.

50 legendary military dwarves armed with full adamantine weapons and armor are not strong enough to visit the circus.
Human outsider/Peasant Get a town drunk to join me, only for him to be mauled by wolves while i limp away and get ambushed going back to town by around 10 goblins, and i still only had the starting spear/knife, needless to say i was boned.
