I want the update now
I just started playing and holy shit this is fun One problem though, even when some of my dwarves have tasks, they decide to loiter around. I tell one to gather some plants, it gathers like 1/4th of the ones i highlighted then stops for a while, standing around, then goes back. I have beds, and they're not sleeping in those when they're not working, my only guess is that they're eating?

I'm trying to catch a Magma Crab by putting an animal on the other side of a glass window, but either they can't see it, or they're not interested in attacking anything.
I guess magma disposal just got a whole lot more important
How do you do that in this version? designate a garbage zone over a magma pit and dump all your refuse?
They're probably on break or eating.
Maybe there's a single water molecule on the tile in question?
Can anyone tell me how can i make a 'secure area' where (and how) i can unload all those goblins snatchers i trapped in cages, so i can train my military on them. Or just how can i 'release' stuff in cages so i can murder it.
A better, faster design is to use the mass pitting technique. You don't have to waste so much time linking cages to levers, especially helpful if you have a lot of cages. http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Mass_pitting Those red hatches lead down to the magma sea, so I can quickly dispose of many creatures quickly, except for thief types and flying creatures. snatchers will need to have the cage opened by a dwarf or a lever. Even then, a dwarf opening it is quicker and mostly safe if you disarm the goblin and strip him naked(see below), with your military focused on him.
I honestly haven't had any success any time I tried disarming a caged goblin, so if someone else could say how, it'd be really useful.
http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Cage#How_to_disarm_hostiles_in_cages Works remarkably well having your dorfs strip down naked goblins before throwing them down to their doom. As for the beds, try making a bed/small room for every single dwarf you have, then assigning the room to them.
Would it have been a good idea to use a caged minotaur as defence? Or will this plan horribly backfire on me when I unleash it on gobbos? Because for what I know I can't move the cage again without setting the beast free after placing it and linking a lever.

Oh, and I tried that disarm thing a week ago with a load of idle dorfs, it didn't work. I was using a constructed cage in that case, so that might have been my issue.
I wish the manager in this game was more of a way to be rid of micromanagement. Like "if I have less than 10 drinks, issue an order to brew 10 times" Maybe in the next next version.. :v:
I'm trying to catch a Magma Crab by putting an animal on the other side of a glass window, but either they can't see it, or they're not interested in attacking anything.
Now I'm trying to drain lava off the map through a passage with a magma-proof cage trap that can be sealed off and drained elsewhere, I hope the "suction" is enough to pull a magma crab in, but I won't know until they drift back close enough.

Cats "adopt" dwarves. They become their pets. You can't butcher them now. This is what causes catsplosions. Cats adopt dwarves, cats have kittens, those kittens adopt dwarves, grow up, have more kittens, ect.
Kill all cats while you still can

Am I going to be kittenfucked in the long run?
Just kill all the kittens with a butcher skilled enough to not let them breed in between slaughters.
Kill all cats while you still can
I like to keep a pair of breeding cats, then I harvest the kittens. Infinite meat, bones and leather.
Butcher kittens when they're born. Or pen them under a bridge and then accidentally pull a certain lever...
Having a breeding pair of dogs is safer but less consistent. No one seems to give a fuck about puppies.
I use geese. I can either get eggs from them, or five billion goslings.
You could have it uncaged in an arena/pit, then dump disarmed goblins into its lair?
Building a arena as I speak, the only thing is I don't understand how to do mass pitting to drop the gobs in which is the reason its a temp defence line now.
I like to keep a pair of breeding cats, then I harvest the kittens. Infinite meat, bones and leather.
Kittens don't give meat, only grown cats do.
Kittens don't give meat, only grown cats do.
My fortress guard all have bone and leather equipment, most of which consists of newborn kittens.
I use dogs for meat and turkeys or peahens (normally peahens) for my eggs. Peahens grow up in a single year and have a fair egg and bone yield. Dogs are just damn useful.

My axeman adventurer just died. He charged this cave that I thought was a megabeast cave because there are like thirty of them. Turns out hundreds of Kolbolds decided to live there. When I got there my hand was immediately sliced up. using only my shield and feet I killed 40 kolbolds mostly shattered skulls. Then I dropped my shield and picked up my axe. I then proceeded to kill 30 kolbolds. My guy was fighting a miner but instead of dodging to the right he dodged to the left and drowned in a lake:suicide:. Final Kolbold casualties: 80 Notable kolbolds plus a couple others
How do I add exotic animals like Badgers and Grizzlybears to my military?
