Well, I actually have both, but on z-level 30 I found granite.

Nothing useful though.
Unless you dug the majority of your fort out of soil or sand then you should have encountered some kind of ore if you have both shallow and deep.
Hmm decisions decisions. Should I place the main entrance of the fortress high up on a very tall mountain (not at the top, but pretty high up nonetheless) or at ground level? I'd imagine fortifying the position high up would be harder but once it's done it would be more secure, but at ground level the mountainside is perfectly straight (easy to carve out and replace the entire mountainside with fortifications brimming with crossbowdorfs and ballistas).

Personally I'd go with the ground level entrance just because you can actually see most of your attackers without having to scroll up and down z levels which is annoying as shit.

That and if you're high up you can't have a lava moat.
That and if you're high up you can't have a lava moat.
Says who
Dwarves will find a way.

you couldn't dig one, true, but you could easily build one.
even better if you're near a glacier, then you can build one out of ice!
To facilitate having adventurers search the tombs of previous heroes, Toady should implement being able to "fast-forward" game-time like how they do it with world generation.
Hell it would be pretty slick to have the whole, "And the world returned to normal for the next 50 years following the collapse of the Dwarven Fortress so and so."
Yes, the game needs this feature so damn much but I'm not sure if it's mentioned anywhere in the development plans. It would also be awesome in adventurer mode when slaughtering whole towns has an effect on the worlds economy and when you've slain the demon that has ruled and won battles for a Goblin civilisation for the duration of it's existence so you can actually see the effect of what you've done.

Yeah, thought about that now (my first fortress ever was like that, on a slope, a fucking pain in the ass).
Is anyone aware of something that will fix the degradation of clothes. I'm tired of the clothing induced fps drop.

Don't let your civ wear any clothes at all in the first place. Remove the cloth tags etc.
So I was thinking, are migrants pulled from the legends lists? or are they randomly generated.
If they were pulled from the lists would it be possible to abandon a fortress, then have some of the members of the old fortress show up as migrants?

Bed Placement says it's Fortress mode.
Surely its not multiplayer as such, but one person plays and others can spectate, as is done with some roguelikes
I hate starting a new fortress, takes so damn long to tunnel everything. Also the FPS counter shows X (Y), what's Y? For example right now it is 254 (25), is the 25 the one I should actually be looking at?

Yeah missed that (actually missed nearly the entire image, just read DF multi and went with that).

Sadly, it probably is.

25 is graphical FPS
254 is how many unit calculations are done per second. Pathfinding and all that.
This is how I understand it though, could be wrong.
I've been thinking about trying this game out... But it looked very complicated, but after reading a LP on RPS, and boatmurdered... I am going for it.
WISH ME LUCK!
Here's the link to the "multiplayer" Dwarf Fortress for all you late people.

I won't wish you good luck.

Enjoy the Fun.

It's fun to lose.
Anyways, I have to say this; The intro looks AWESOME!
Yes, it's multiplayer. No, it's not fake.
You can do either adventurer or fortress mode, but fortress mode is more fun.
The way it works is the server can have one [or more] running instances of DF, and you can choose what one to connect to. It gets a bit mad if everyone's trying to grab control all at once, but if you're patient and take turns, everything works out okay. Basically everyone can watch, but only one person can really play at once, so it's a bit like a succession game in that only one player can effectively do anything at any one time, but it's more fun because it doesn't take any time at all to switch to another player's turn, and everyone can watch, live.
That particular server is from a bay12games thread started by Carnes here.
If there's enough interest I may be able to host a dfterm server just for facepunch, but it's nice that there's an established one.
that's still pretty cool
I just got a wave of immigrants, and one of the children they brought with them immediately got a finger bitten off by a badger.
Such is life in Ushrirkadol.
I am a total failure at this game... But for some reason, every dwarf is still alive.
I am scared guys.
I thought everyone here knew about DFTerm, huh. We've discussed it countless times during the 14 threads. Then again, not everyone has been lurking around here so long.
I just embarked on a new area, it's completely flat with a stream running through the middle, my favorite type of area to start in.
Now for the bad part, there are a shit ton of hippos in said stream, how fucked am I on a scale of 1-10?

Like 5, I'm pretty sure Hippos were nerfed.
I hope so, my old instincts were kicking in when I saw carp in the river, but I reminded myself that they are no longer something to be feared, hippos on the other hand I'm unsure of.
