Well prefferably as quick as possible, but keep in mind that the narrative is important. Take your time documenting the efforts of your dwarves as well.

There's screenfull of text displayed by a text editor program and then there's a screen full of text that serves as a display and UI for the program that does more in quantity and complexity of calculations than the programs they use to design the aerodynamics for aircraft

ASCII doesn't get old as quickly as the tilesets.
The noly thing that bothers me in ASCII is egraved walls.
But it's minor.
You can change the way they appear in an ini file.
