Good thing lead poisoning does not exist in DF. In my fortress if it's made of a metal, there is an extremely high chance it's lead (if possible).

Occasionally I will allow one to "ascend" to the regular society, so long as they have no personal attachment to any members of the wretched masses.

Definitely going to do that. Going to build the immigrant slums a few Z-levels under the main bridge, that way all the shit I want rid off fall down onto their little crap city. Goblins too, a bit like with the Rancor (only smaller, dumber, less useful and probably more smelly).

Gonna start off with the older version without the Z though, so as to learn the most simple way possible. As soon as I've gotten it down and can actually run a decent fortress, I'll flip over to the 3D version. I think that's a bad idea and that you'll be overwhelmed when you go to try and learn the full game. It's best to just jump in and endure the learning curve. It took me at least 3 trys to get into the game and I've heard several people say the same. Try looking up some video tutorials and go on the wiki. Also, people in this thread will always be happy to answer any of your questions.

Why thank you. I've already tried a bit of 2D. After six or seven cave-ins I tried to find a way to wall my dwarves into the cave and just let them die. Then I couldn't find out how to do that so I just aborted that game.

Having a fort where the only metal is gold (and copper, but that's discovered in my update) so all artifacts are forced to contain gold and not, for instance, iron, makes for a very rich and defenseless target for goblins.

So I'm following 51ppycup's tutorials and I'm at the choose points menu before embark and I noticed he has a ton more points available than I do. I noticed that he has an iron anvil selected and I have a steel anvil selected by default, but there is no iron anvil to select from. Is this a bug or something?

Metal is pretty rare in all but custom worlds, so they probably are at the point where the mines have run dry and all the available iron's been converted into steel.

Anvils are perfect if you want to build armor/weapons/cups to sell to the first caravan though.

Every time I make a new embark everything goes well until some minor inconvienience leads to some catastrophic failure. I drowned one of my dwarves while trying to drain the pond and another dwarf went crazy and killed 2 of my other dwarves then killed himself causing another dwarf to go crazy and kill all of my animals. I have 4 dwarves now. What do I do.
