So I have never been so satisfied where I bite off a bandit's head, spit it out and make the bandit I spat it at explode.
How the FUCK can you do that?
I finally figured out mass pitting in fort mode. Flung 4 goblins into a 20-z level fall into my caverns. They had to watch, one-by-one, as their comrades were stripped of their clothes and items, then tipped ever-so-slightly through a hatch in the floor to a massive fall, whereupon they smash into the rocky cave floor below, severely crippling them, while also stranding them on a small pillar of rock, exposed to the cave monsters all around them. I plan on making it a firing range for rookie dwarves later on.

Bite his head. Shake till it comes off.
Throw > aim at dude. Threw so hard he didn't really explode as much as turn into a pile of goo.

Dwarf Fortress : Making spongey textured objects in real life more devestating than a haymaker in the face.

Mac version!?
How do you assign jobs? Manually or a working Mac version of Dwarf Therapist?
Too bad. That leaves just Mr. N and then the overseer list stops there
Alright, just upload it and tell me how to set it up so I can play, never did one of these before.
Is it possible to make preset skills for adventurer mode? It's pretty tedious to go through the skill list over and over again when starting a new adventurer dude.
e: Why do I keep crashing every time my adventurer sleeps? The DF client just infinitely stays white, as in not working. This happens in Fortress mode when saving, but it never just STAYS like this. I let the client sit, and it still didn't finish loading his sleep cycle, even after 30 minutes of letting it run.

Oh, and in Fortress mode: how do I make a well that uses river water that isn't "dusted with mud"? I'm using the easier route, which is digging out an underground reservoir for the well to use, but the tiles the water flows into eventually just get covered with mud. I wanna reduce my dwarves bad thoughts the most possible. :(

Water that's only 1 Urist* deep over a dug tile will be muddy, fill it up a little more and it will clear up.
*I believe this is the right lingo for "one 3D tile" :v:

I think I did do that, and it still ended up being some form of "stagnant water".

Manually, ofcourse.

You like to choke yourself when you masturbate dont you?
You must if you manually assign labour

Hey now, manually assigning jobs isn't that bad when you catch them as migrants, especially if you just give all of them the same job when there isn't a role needing to be filled (or they have no useful skills.)
I keep very few humans in my fortresses, the migrants allowed inside the walls are converted to slave labour to construct houses and walls or militiamen.
I rarely even assign labour, I just let them do whatever the fuck they feel its their "calling" to do.
*This may or may not result in repeated fortress demise

You're in for some fun!
If there's no discipline among your dwarves at the time of peace, you're unproductive but fine.
When a beast or a siege approaches, the resulting bloodbath will result in a swift deterioration of sanity in the dwarven society. Avoid it at all costs.
Or don't give a fuck and just assign them emergency burrows to hide in.
Is there any way to restrict/assign immigrants to a certain area (then I'll manually choose the useful ones)? Would be faster than doing it manually.

Slam all of them into a slum-burrow and choose which ones are worthy of ascension into civilized society.

You can divide your fortress by Z-levels and make whole Z-levels into burrows, it's pretty efficient.
Vertical designs are generally pretty useful in DF, it's a fact many people overlook.
I've finally tracked down and slain the vile Hydra that had murdered my last adventurer and most of his party. There was one survivor that was still sitting outside the lair with a missing leg, but she joined me for the fight. I took one of the hydra heads and some of my last adventurer's blood with me as a keepsake.
Unfortunately, the woman who I recruited from my last party was shot and killed shortly afterward by a goblin ambush. At least my stab-addicted herbalist pal went and shanked that goblin a good 20 times.
Once I hit 80 dwarfs all migrants from that point on are assigned to work in the mines until they die from starvation/thrist.
I use a series of doors to prevent them getting friendly with real people of my fortress to prevent tantrum spirals. Though in the new version this may lead to a ghost problem... Havent hit 80 yet so I dont know :/

I usually assign the low-tier peasants to masonry and have huge sweatshops underground that turn all rock (mined by the dwarves for whom there were not enough workshops) into crafts to deal with merchants if I decide they deserve to live. Or if they carry alcohol.

Smooth detailing/masonry/metalcrafting all day, everyday. When you want to build something cool out of stone/metal, you'll have as many as 15-20 Dwarves building it at any given time.
Then when they're busy doing that you can casually go amongst them and pick which does jobs which are needed, but otherwise don't require immediate specialization (strand extraction and furnace operation, for one.)
