Here's the basic layout of the three traps that dump enemies into the labyrinth. The bridges outlined in purple drop them in with the minotaur when something steps on one of the pressure plates. They're usually pretty badly wounded, and occasionally die from the fall. I'm thinking about adding a second set of bridges that lower the fall damage and hold them until I decide to pull a level and release them into the labyrinth. The dotted blue line is a rough outline of the labyrinth. Ah, he killed another siege-full of goblins, but one of his arms was cut open and he got shot with a silver bolt in his other arm... then a troll gored out one of his teeth. I certainly hope he's alright! Now these two trolls are just running around in the maze completely avoiding him, since they're significantly faster than he is. Gah! Those fiends, a squad of goblin crossbowmen fell down and shot him five times before he managed to kill them all. They even shot him in the spine and shot one of his horns off.
You oughta give him a bit of a break. Re-capture him and put him somewhere safe.
Well, looks like he's going to bleed to death, I'm afraid. He was faint, and now he is pale after a few weeks. Unless these wounds suddenly turn into scars I'm afraid he's done for. Ah well, he had a good run. Killed 81 little bastards with a robe. Next time I'll put something even bigger in there, like a cyclops or a forgotten beast. The actual labyrinth could use a cleaning anyway, and I'd been meaning to make some functionality and aesthetic upgrades to the delivery system. Yep. He's dead. I'll leave his body, his trademark leather beating robe and the silver bolt that has his death listed on it in there as a monument of sorts. Cleaning the rest of this junk out.

Gonna play again, after getting Ironhand once more. I'm feeling lazy.
So I just lost a quarter of my fortress because the fucking idiots kept going outside to pick up their dead comrades shit. Fuck. [editline]5th August 2011[/editline] Tantrum spiral. God damn it.
I asked Toady One a thing.

How much more traffic did the website get after that article by the NYT was published? I'm curious, since the more media coverage this gets, the more support you will receive. It'd be really interesting to see this game become more and more "mainstream", in the non-negative sorta way.
You have to take all the numbers from these stats sites with a grain of salt, but according to them bay12games went from the ~100,000th most visited site to the 30,000th for the week the article was out, and bay12forums went from 50,000 to 40,000. It has all settled back down though. The forums seem to be seeing about 100 more people during the day still though, and contributions were solid and haven't quite scaled all the way back yet. None of the publicity events have a massive lasting effect, but they have a short term effect coupled with a small lasting effect. Support has always been slowly growing, and this'll definitely help with that.
My fortress spiraled out of control because a rampaging horse tore through everyone. :v:
My fortress spiraled out of control because a rampaging horse tore through everyone. :v:
And now all my dwarves are going insane and killing each other. :v::v: Anyone wanna stay at my fort?
The forbid function is your friend
I couldn't forbid the stuff fast enough. Anyways I found a very good embark with a volcano and iron.
1. Pause 2. Forbid
There's even a way to mass forbid items.
There's even a way to mass forbid items.
Oh that's still there? Derp. I thought it got taken out after 40d. EDIT: ...which I've forgotten how to do anyway. Halp?
1. Pause 2. Forbid
]] What I meant was that by the time I figured out what was happening it was too late.
Oh that's still there? Derp. I thought it got taken out after 40d. EDIT: ...which I've forgotten how to do anyway. Halp?
the designation system then the buildings/items options
So my new fortress has over 500 meat from hunting elephants and giraffes/ [editline]5th August 2011[/editline] Soundsense has some depressing music in winter... [editline]5th August 2011[/editline] And now a vulture randomly exploded in front of my fortress
I have decided to also make a labyrinth as it sounds boss. Digging is done and all the walls are smoothed. All that has to be done is rig a drop system to drop sieges into several entry points. As for my 'minotaur' I happen to have a few forgotten beasts in the caverns far below my fort, one a man-like armadillo, the other a flying snowman, another a flying crab. I plan to capture one and unleash it on the labyrinth upon completion. Scratch that. The snowman somehow bypassed my traps and got carved up like a Christmas turkey by my soldiers.
Unfortunately the only way to capture a forgotten beast in a cage trap is if the cage trap has a giant cave spider web on it. I think it may also capture them if they fall unconscious from nearby cave-ins. Alternatively you can just capture one the manly way with some neat pit-trap or raised bridge system using mechanisms. Another plus side of having forgotten beasts in your labyrinth is that they are all friendly to each other, so you can have as many of them as you want and they'll get along fine. That's actually one thing I was considering to fill the gap my minotaur's death has left. I have several dozen forgotten beasts roaming around down in the caves that could be put to work.
Kill the flying ones.
I couldn't forbid the stuff fast enough. Anyways I found a very good embark with a volcano and iron.
Or you could just set in the orders that all dropped items auto-forbid.
Alright, just upload it and tell me how to set it up so I can play, never did one of these before.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9623428/region1.zip Sorry for the lateness, was away from home for a while. Ask Canuhearmenow about getting it working, I have no clue what exactly he did.
My labyrinth is pretty much done. Those dig designations are future pits-to-be, I'm hesitant to dig them as I expect a siege at any moment. All the forgotten beasts in my caverns, even the ones i haven't heard of, seem to all have died for some reason which is disappointing to say the least. Hoping for some new green friends to show up to explore the happy fun-time maze soon.
Do Human bowmen that come with traders like shooting randomly? Cause one of them opened fire on my Hunter and now my entire army is trying to kill him.
So I got a person that loves eating Voracious Cave Crawlers, but hates worms....
[del]Kill[/del] cripple the flying ones.
Fixed. Those surplus weavers, strand extractors, and cheesemakers have to go somewhere, don't they?
I got the siege I asked for, only I got elf merchants too. Half of the caravans fell into the labyrinth with the gobbos and the others were butchered on the surface. Only one elf made it into the fortress alive. He went insane, so I threw him into the labyrinth myself. Now the once-clean labyrinth looks like this: There are several dozen corpses in that room with all the items. They came from the weaklings who failed to survive the fall or had others land on them. Now all I have to do is catch this nice-looking forgotten beast I've stumbled across and I'll have my 'Minotaur' unit.
Finally figured out how to set army schedules. This would've been nice during the berserk horse incident!
Got my first ambush, they killed all my wardogs but I managed to catch 5 of the fuckers. My defenses are holding I just need a shitload more traps [editline]6th August 2011[/editline] And soundsense starts playing a very depressing song.
Oh god a siege AND a minotaur. Good thing I have two legendary dwarfs. [editline]6th August 2011[/editline] Fuck yeah I caged the minotaur.
