so how does time work in DF?
Does it restart in the year the region was generated every time you start a new fortress?
Or is it continuous every time you abandon/start a new fort?
The world's generated, then span forwards to the time you want. Whenever you are playing as a fortress, (not sure about adventure mode) the time goes forwards. If you abandon / loose the fortress, and send out a reclamation team to the same area, it should still arrive in spring, I think.

An ettin decided that fucking my shit up would be fun, so he did.
killed about 30 dwarves, including my entire militia, 3 legendary miners and the most social dwarf ever.
the resulting tantrum spiral will end my fortress.
The ettin was finally taken down by a berserk miner.
what the hell. I embarked in a 'Hot' labeled zone and my water sources are still freezing in winter months. :(
Alright, Adventure mode, let's do thi-
The Flying Bronze Bolt has hit you in the head, lodging firmly in the wound!
You have been struck down.
Spring finally came after a long winter in which half my fortress died from thirst and random tantrum spirals. Just after getting my first rounds of booze to the remaining dwarves. I'm eagerly awaiting immigrants or traders, both of my miners drowned when they fell in an underground lake when I was trying to make a well.
Do goblin ambushes come after a set minimum population? I'm kind of struggling with these poor guys. :(

Noooooo, My expedition leader commited suicide.

Wealth determines when things like that happen. While they are random to a certain extent you will ALWAYS be attacked after surpassing a certain wealth threshold. I assume this is the case for sieges as it's certainly the case for Megabeasts.

Time advances in Adventure mode too, you can see the various heroic deeds you did in the Legends mode later.
I was pretty surprised at my first successful adventurer, lasted like a year.
I have now found out that Haunted lands are the easiest of all dangerous lands the only thing that is haunted that came for me was 2 little army of dark gnomes. all those little things did was run around screaming then they died from my military.
is it possible to engrave blocks?

dust...
My dwarves don't want to be drafted into my military. Well, they better get used to killing unicorn and deer, because they aint leavin'.
Duplicate Raws Experiment
Attempt 1:
Found good embark, terrifying mountains and some metals and soil.
- took stock of equipment noticed first peculiarity: dwarves had packed: 1 cave spider chitin chest.
- expedition leader's clothing made from cave swallow tallow.
Strike The Earth!
Addendum:
Checked what 'food' the dwarves had brought, turned out to be whole cave fish women.
Conclusion:
Dwarves killed by horde of badger men.
also, it would seem that the number of duplicated entries directly corresponds to the bizzarity of the world created. this attempt was with a single duplicated entry, for the roc.
further testing is needed for this hypothesis.
Attempt 2:
duplicated dwarf raws.
Will use adventure mode for this experiment.
first noticed difference: racial values appear to be switched massively.
elves are humans, goblins are elves and humans are dwarves. this implies that dwarves are taking the place of goblins.
started as elven lasher, had no abnormal equipment.
approached bandit camp, was greeted my 12 bandits.
found night creature lair, attempting to stop there crashed game.
Attempt 3:
duplicated vermin raws.
saw immediate radical chages, elves instead of dwarves, frozen cave spider ichor listed as leather, along side several types of soap.
was able to take 'green devourer eggs' a cavern level 2/3 creature.
also able to take gnome eggs.
cave fish skin and tallow cloth available.
vulture sinew and frozen crocodile pus listed as cheese. took breeding pair of crocs out of interest.
world passes into ages of savannah titan.
large number of friendly crocodiles surround wagon at embark.
Adventure mode:
kobolds take place of elves, elves take place of dwarves
goblins appear to remain the same.
played as swordbold. random name was 'stranger'.
town was populated by goblins.
possessed oak sword and pine shield.
crashed after wiping out first bandit camp.
Getting bored of my current fortress (damn my idiocy when I decided to not embark in an evil biome, there is nothing but goblins sieges around here). What should I do to spice shit up? Saw a Cthulhu mod that looked interesting.
[editline]20th August 2011[/editline]
Reading the posts above, maybe I should duplicate the raws.
Is there any way to make my chief medical dwarf diagnose one of my severely injured dwarves? He's just sitting there getting drunk in the meeting hall while other dwarves tend to his hunger and thirst. >:(

he needs the healthcare labours enabled, otherwise he'll do that.

Oh wow, thanks. I didn't even know there was a healthcare menu, I guess my eyes always glanced over it.
This is so fucking metal. I mean damn.

5 months since the last update soon, I hope it comes out in a not-too-distant future.

Dwarf death metal bands?
Or would they be more into folk metal?
Hmm, Wooden Pints?

that's nothing, the cave fish skin clothes started rotting not soon after.
I am so fucking happy right now. My fort just survived a siege with 1 troll group and 4 goblin groups. Although heavy losses (7 militia). I got them all! They are either bleeding out or dead right now. I can't belive that my fort survived, I just killed a megabeast before too. And almost all of my soldiers were recruits. I guess you can't say anything against the usefulness of archers/marksdwarfs.
Here is a pic of the fight at my fort. There were more further away as well.

I love Dwarf Fortress but I've never played it with the ASCII graphics. I don't care if that makes me a casual I just find it ten times easier. :v:

Well this is the first fort I do play with ASCII, I wanted to really give it a try. And so far it's going good. I am starting to get used to it. The only thing I am missing though is the color that Mayday's skin pack had and that it was perfectly squared so was easier to do more precise digging/building.
Then get a square ASCII tileset.
Then get a square ASCII tileset.
Got any to recommend? There seems to be loads of them.

Masks are slick as fuck, only problem is if you set them to be available as a producable item then everyone shows up wearing one.
I have an entire fortress of Humans wearing masks (not via choice though,) it's like From Dust only more violent.

Sounds pretty awesome to me.
Sounds pretty awesome to me.
Makes creating a death squad of soldiers wearing capes and masks a little dull though.
Hm, why won't my dwarfs fill my ponds? I have buckets, loads of them. Loads of water sources (including a well). They can get to the pond. But I see no one with the job, I even got idlers.
how do you make dwarves fill empty areas anyways?
i had no idea you could do that
how do you make dwarves fill empty areas anyways?
