Zones (i) then pit/pond(p). It seems that it have to be empty space, a pit or pond that is (a hole).
Man, I'm desperate to keep my fortress afloat. I've never gotten this far to 'endgame' before. :(
My little fortress of around 90 filthy peasant worker dwarves is steadily growing, I'm worried about the 110 mark though, that's when the 'minimum population' thing reaches the titan attack trigger. Does it attack directly after I get my 110th dwarf? or does it just allow the random chance of it to attack at any time afterwards.
[editline]20th August 2011[/editline]
My military is sort of small too, just a single squad of ten macedwarves, they've held off like 6 little goblin ambushes but I've lost between 2-4 each, I only have 2 of my original dwarves in the squad while I keep having to replace the dead ones with fresh meat. :(
Any recommendations? I'm tempted to make a ranged squad. It's maddening me when I try to get the macedwarves to attack deer for quicker training but they end up whining about hunger and thirst after 15 seconds of chasing the fucker around.
how do you make dwarves fill empty areas anyways?
i had no idea you could do that
I think the hole they dump things into has to be at least 1 z level above the pit they're dumping into.

First make an entire squad of Marksdwarfs, then make all the stuff they need (armor, quivers, crossbows, bolts and all that). Make both squads carry rations with them, waterskins(made from leather) are a tip. Give them bags as well so they can carry with food. Now you can go out and train on animals without having the issue of they getting thirsty or hungry. There is still one problem though, some (if not almost all) dwarfs get bad thoughts if they are too long in duty/patrolling(stationing, and so on).
Archers is extremely useful, especially when you have set up a fort like me. Where they can be over the enemy and rain death on them. They don't need to beparticularly skilled they just need an advantage so they don't get raped. That is what you could use your mace squad for, keeping the enemy occupied while the ranged squad constantly shoots at them/it. I do a similar thing, my Fortress Guard squad is ranged and my militia is melee. Works like a charm, especially against goblins since arrows/bolts can easily insta-kill them if you are lucky.

Alright, I always assumed it was an issue with the carrying thing. Do they just need waterskins? Will other things work too? Can they carry booze in them? What do I need to carry solid food in?
When is that new update coming out the wait is killing me
Alright, I always assumed it was an issue with the carrying thing. Do they just need waterskins? Will other things work too? What do I need to carry food in?
Last time I checked they can't carry food with them, but this isn't as much an issue as water is a more pressing issue and they can last longer without food than they can without booze/water.
Has Adventure mode had hunger and thirst added back in yet? Can I go back to my compulsive need to lick blood off everything?
Also, they can shoot off the top off walls right? I kind of always wanted to rain death on the melee invaders as they confusingly just run in circles.
e: damn automerge

I think catapults can. Not that I've ever hit anything with one of those fucking things.
They can also shoot through Fortifications, but then again so can the enemy.

I think making them have backpacks let them carry food.

I honestly hate marksdwarves, getting them to actually FIRE THE FUCKING CROSSBOWS is a pain in the ass and if they aren't behind a fucking barricade they run around like headless puppies bruising people with their crossbows.
A nice shiny axe in the hands of a dwarf that has trained and bathed in the blood of countless goblin prisoners is far simpler.

I'm honestly trying to level my melee dwarves skills up but the wild life is just too fast for them all and regular training just seems slow and redundant.
I got other question again too, I have my melee squad switching off 5 dwarves every month of the year. Is it possible to just get the 5 'active' dwarves who were passively training to do one of the Squad Menu duty commands, such as attempting to kill wildlife? It's kind of annoying to wait for the inactive dwarves to gather equipment and travel all the way to the active ones as they get more and more annoyed.
Also, they don't seem to drink or eat when chasing the wildlife for training, is it only passive settings for them that makes them drink?
Using goblin prisoners collected by a large hallway of traps and throwing them into an arena with one of your melee dwarves works wonders. If you use wooden weapons, the fights last longer and the dwarf gets more training.
Also disarm prisoners when training rookie dwarves, or they may be spending some time with nasty wounds in your hospital.

when i do get goblins i already have around 100 dwarfs.

I usually shut my main gate, and open a gate with a long, winding hallway filled with cage traps.

In one Fortress I spent a while perfecting one of these "false entrances" that, when a certain level is pulled, seals it at both ends. Another lever fills it with water and another lever drains it. Then all that's left to do is to clean it out of any loot and dump the corpses on the refuse pile.
is it stupid to try to steal magma from hell? because i need magma and i actually checked everywhere for a sea but there is not one magma sea or lake.
is it stupid to try to steal magma from hell? because i need magma and i actually checked everywhere for a sea but there is not one magma sea or lake.
Define "Stupid". Because I'm pretty sure something will happen.

Percived "stupidity" should NEVER put one off in Dwarf Fortress.
As a matter of fact, it's probably a plus.

Siphoning magma from hell is probably the most dorfy idea ever. Do it man.
This post is not responsible for the "potential" massacre of all your dwarves.
I suppose taking magma from hell would be possible, make the pump system.
Enclose the bottom half then break through. BUILD THE LAST BIT AS FAST AS POSSIBLE.
And hope for the best.

Indeed. If you're not prepared to get your entire Fortress killed pursuing some insane engineering project then you're not a proper Dorf.
For MegaDorf points you have to weaponise whatever that project is.
Found this on the DF wiki thought it might help people like me who can not remember the metals system.

do monsters in hell get captured by traps?

They all have trap avoid tags, but you can actually capture them if you get them go unconcious on a trap by performing a cave-in or something alike.
darn i wanted to release hell and have the only acesess to my base a line like 3x50 blocks full of traps :\

there is no magma in hell.
there's the magma sea above it, but hell/the underworld is bellow that and is made of slade and demons. no magma.
Anyone know of a video on how to make the pump system to pump water or magma up i have never see it in actual dwarffortress and the 3d .gifs on dwarffortress wiki dont make sense.

I've already stripped all my POW's naked of their possessions, And most of those were melted into bars I didn't have (I only have native silver in my area). I'm assuming there's no way to give the caged enemies weak weapons and a bit of armor? :/
Sorry to sound dumb, but does anyone know what tileset and graphical set cpt. Duck is using in his video tutorial?
