According to the wiki, muddied water causes infections and unhappy thoughts if drank.
Should I just unforbid the well and let them drink or somehow clean up the water?

I'd recommend draining the reservoir and replacing the ground with stone flooring.

The floor is made of smoothed and engraved stone.

How can I drain the reservoir, anyway? It's already filled up to 7/7.
Argh, caverns much higher than expected, breach them accidently just after the traders stormed off, offended at making a 33% profit margin (I was trying for 3000 of stuff and offering 4000). Mental note: bring broker next time, a civilian can't cut it.
Pity, I like that fort, but I doubt it will survive, though maybe if I floor off the cavern... never dealt with one before, and have no armour.
How do I designate stones to be thrown in the trash.
How do I designate stones to be thrown in the trash.
If you already have a dump zone set, just select them with the look command, and hit d to set them to be dumped. Under the main designations menu there's also a option for mass dumping an area of items, which might be faster for you.
Pity, I like that fort, but I doubt it will survive, though maybe if I floor off the cavern... never dealt with one before, and have no armour.
I wouldn't worry too much about the first cavern. It's pretty safe, and you can even let hunters/fishers go into it to get food (and keep it safe at the same time by killing everything).
every time I try to play this game I can't get into it

d-b-d, select area.
I wish blood was a liquid type. A blood fountain would be an excellent way to say "This fortress is complete."

Knowing Toady, eventually that wish will come true...
When it does, it will be glorious.

You should do stand-up
I was thinking about hosting a succession/bloodline game on FP, does any of you have any experience?
If so, then please reply/PM me.
I guess every attempt was a massive failure, weren't they?
I guess every attempt was a massive failure, weren't they?
Yeah, the last one ended right after I finished like 3 people's turns and then did mine
Maybe, just maybe if we had enough players, we could try to do one, right?
The day I can designate creatures as ammunition for catapults in Dwarf Fortress is the day I give Bay 12 all my money. THINK OF THE POSSIBILITIES.
"Notch: Millions on his bank account, staff of people helping him.
Toady: His brother and around 3k a month.
Minecraft - Adventure Update: Three new critters, experience system that does nothing, some cosmetic changes, villages without NPCs, Dungeons.
Dwarf Fortress, next update: Vampires, werewolves, mummies, zombies and skeletons are back, necromancers, countless curses, worldwide zombie apocalypses, 8 new animals from the donation drive, each one of them completely different from each other. Whole cities, complete with NPCs, furniture traceable on the world gen, sewers, catacombs, dungeons, pyramids, tombs, interactions as an adventurer and much much more"

so true
so true
Except one has graphics and the other doesn't. Besides the funny thing with Notch is he rarely even gets original material; the last updates or so was him taking the best the fanbase had to offer and simply slapping it on.

Both have graphics.
Minecraft assets aren't exactly hard to make unless Notch coded an absolutely retarded system. 16x16 textures, about 16 polygons. Wow.
Will a 2-3 drop fall onto simple upright wooden spikes do enough damage to break a leg or something?
I've just got a simple drop with a retracting bridge for my tiny little (3 seasons in) fort. Of course, the bridge has a load of traps before and after, too, along with a fortification for a ballista. Only got 15 dwarves atm, so I can't really do much that's not a trap or the like.

Millions of dollars pretty much spoils you.
so true
Hey now, they also added melons. Does that not justify two months of work?
so true
True. Yet Toady and his brother choose to work on DF alone. I'm almost certain there is no lack of fans wanting to help out with the final project. The modding community for DF is fairly large if I recall.
As for the money, Dwarf Fortress is funded off occasional donations, Minecraft gets their money from sales. It's not really a fair comparison.

It should, Though you're better off just making a moat besides spikes. Last time I checked goblins/nontitans hate water and will die almost instantly upon falling into it.
Also, I have a questions regarding the next update, hopefully Orkel or someone can answer this. Will friendly NPCs in the next update actually do things? As in, will they do more than just standing in some jumbled up group inside of their abodes?
I considered a moat, but the river is 10 z levels under me (I'm on a pretty sheer mountain) and I'm too lazy. I might bring it down to 4-5z levels as I figured that my marksdwarfs could level up on the broken leg enemies.
Also, a spike is more gruesome :v:
I think that the reason that water finishes them is that falling into it stuns you, and if you're stunned and below amature swimmer, it drowns you. Not sure though.

Always embark on rivers.
I did - the river's just at the base of the mountain.
Which manages to be a few Z levels below my fortress.
Do grates block items? I have a drowning pit built but when I flush the water the items are nowhere to be found. If they don't, any way to let water though but not items?
