My first embark in literally a year. This entire mountain seems to be made of gold. The entrance to my fortress is literally a corridor of gold.

Oh you bet your ass I've smoothed it. Looks sexy as fuuuuck. Traders are gunna be impressed.

Letsplay is a western devil site apparantly.

[editline]2nd November 2011[/editline] It's in comic form: http://boatmurdered.smackjeeves.com/comics/735733/chronicles-of-boatmurdered-cover/ [editline]2nd November 2011[/editline] Woops it's not finished. [editline]2nd November 2011[/editline] Real sorry buddy, you're gonna have to find a proxy to hide behind.

Well thanks for trying anyway, didn't somebody here put together a "DF legends" page with tales of intrest? Would have been pretty good if it was maintained, so many ammusing tales.
I've just been hit with a 30+ goblin and 10 troll siege. Casualties: Dwarf: 0 Siege: 40+ Civilian dwarves collecting body parts for delicious meals: 200 [editline]2nd November 2011[/editline] I just realised one of my migrants is legendary at all social skills. Kind of explains the sudden baby boom - 25% of my 200+ population is kids and I get birth announcements every five minutes.
O, master miners, please do not strike me down for using a tileset and find flaws in my killer depot. I will link two levers to the gears near the pumps to be able to toggle them.
It looks alright but be aware of a few things: a) you should have a way to pump out the water b) water can go through pumps, it doesn't act like a wall (aka it will flow out if it has no more space) c) you have to retrieve the spoils somehow (tip: they get stuck on floor bars, water doesn't) d) in order for the water wheel to operate, if that's a brook, you need to channel through the tiles underneath it. And I'm using the same tileset so we cool
It looks alright but be aware of a few things: a) you should have a way to pump out the water
If you check the image again, the two pumps are on different levels. The upper one is on Z+1 and the lower one is on Z±0.
b) water can go through pumps, it doesn't act like a wall (aka it will flow out if it has no more space)
Really? That sucks, is there any way to prevent this? Perhaps a kind of a pump stack or build it underground? Although the wiki says otherwise(?): http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Screw_pump#Example_layouts
c) you have to retrieve the spoils somehow (tip: they get stuck on floor bars, water doesn't)
If I pump out the water, the (elven) spoils stay, no?
d) in order for the water wheel to operate, if that's a brook, you need to channel through the tiles underneath it.
Yeah, I figured that out, thanks.
Boatmurdered is seriously the funniest thing I have ever read.
A frogman jumped out of a well and surprised Sibruk, one of the military dwarves. He killed the froggie pretty easily, but then he somehow got stuck in the well. So now little Timmy there is dying of thirst because he can't drink from the well that his fat ass is stuck in. His friends don't seem to have any trouble drinking around him. I guess they brought straws or something.

Boatmurdered is seriously the funniest thing I have ever read.
It gets better and better as it progresses.
Boatmurdered is seriously the funniest thing I have ever read.
Great. I've never read this and I have an essay to write. Guess which one I chose to do?
My depot worked as planned, killed my first elves just now.
Does anyone know if there is a Boatmurdered PDF? I want to read it offline (cough, in class, cough)
Toady makes a good amount of money in donations. Reminds me I got to donate soon, after the month of the empty wallet.
Reminds me I got to donate soon, after the month of the empty wallet.
As soon as they each get their respective next updates out, I'm donating to DF and KSP.
So I just started dwarf fortress because everyone keeps telling me to do so. I set up a fort, dig a 9x3 area and place a refuse pile there. Channel it out so miasma won't appear. Then, I pre-emptively want to place grates on there and wall it off to prevent any kind of invaders from using that later. I grate the squares at the edges, but the central 7 are open because I cannot build grates there. I shrug and see I can build a floor there. So I do that. Big mistake. Urist McDumbfuck puts a floor in the open hole and drops it. And it falls down one Z-level. Suddenly, Urista McPoorsod is extremely injured. All limbs fractured to hell, guts are injured and left lung is fractured. I figure she won't make it. My number one medical dwarf, however, thinks differently. Having arrived less than a week before, he immediately drags her to the dining room, places her on a table there and performs surgery with no tools or assistance whatsoever. Blood spills over the tables while the other dwarves keep eating on the tables around it. Then, he drags her to what I quickly assigned as a medical bay (which was actually just some guy's room, who I booted out) and he puts her in the bed. Only her left arm is fractured, the rest has recovered, and she has been resting. Additionally, Urist McAwesomeDoc is now romantically involved with her. I like to imagine he karate-chopped her open and performed surgery with his bare hands. I love this game already.

Also seems like your doing pretty good for just starting out.

Check her medical screen if he has any nerve injuries in her legs that prevent her from moving. If so, make sure she can get a crutch to walk around with. Generally once you get a fractured bone set, sutured, and splinted, they're good to go as usual (albeit slower because of the injury). If you have no bone setters, make sure you have that job set to someone so he can set her bones into place. Hell just enable all medical skills for the main medical dwarf. [editline]2nd November 2011[/editline] "All limbs fractured to hell" clearly means you have used up your starting supply of splints and perhaps other stuff too, so make them asap. Also read the wiki on how to make soap. You'll need it to prevent deadly infections.
First time I ever played, I accidently caved in my fort on my starting 7. In under 10 minutes :v:

The health screen indicates all is normal. No cuts, just inner bruises, it seems. EDIT: nevermind, two infections. Oh dear.

[editline]2nd November 2011[/editline] The surgeon might excise rotten tissue to stop the gangrene but not always.
Dear God. Accidents on the work floor are REALLY serious in this game.
Not if your hospitals are well prepared :>
Dear God. Accidents on the work floor are REALLY serious in this game.
"Safety in the workplace" A book that will never see the light of day. Other books from the dwarven plane of non-existance: "A Guide to being a good midwife" "Urist's Anatomy" "The dummy's guide to: Efficiency" "How to: Quit an addiction" And "How to be more green: Reducing your Carbon footprint."
Not if your hospitals are well prepared :>
Too bad this is like the second in-game year and I'm still setting up shop :v:
Does anyone have a comprehensive guide on how to set up an effective hospital? The wiki has a very bare-bones (slight pun unintended) one.
Too bad this is like the second in-game year and I'm still setting up shop :v:
Once you learn the game you'll be faster. I usually have workshops, bedrooms, dining area, farm etc set up before the dwarves even go to sleep for their first time.
