How I feel with my first successful (worth 1 million) fort:

I think that that's something universal amongst DF players :v:
I have this mighty beast chained up in a gold chain to guard my fortress entrance.

dropped him 7 z levels onto spikes and shot him with so many bolts, the combat log is 5 pages long with just bolt hits.

Add honey for perfection!
None can stand up against the brutal wrath of the honey badger.
I just witnessed one of my dwarves hauling 10000 dwarfgrams of vomit to the refuse pile.
Eww.

I know you probably know all this but this is coming from experience just in case.
1. Use manager for basic things: brewing, cooking, encrusting gems, making clothing, etc.
2. Keep your military well-supplied and trained. Recruit unneeded peasants if there is need for troops.
3. Focus more on being an independent fort. More money = more sieges = more dead caravans. Be prepared to go for years without contact with the outside world.
4. Find cotton candy. Mine cotton candy. Don't break the circus tent. Make some dandy suits.
5. Smooth everything. Increase the value of your fort. Encrust furniture with bone and gems, make engravings with professional engravers, anything to increase your forts value.
6. Keep the dorfs happy. Keep everyone clothed, homed, and well-nourished. A happy dorf means a happy home.

What bolts?
If adamantine, they're light as feather and won't do shit.

I was wondering about that. What makes a bolt better: weight or penetration? Is a silver bolt better because it packs a punch or is an iron/steel bolt better because of its ability to skewer organs?

If your playing vanilla, just send in a couple children to punch it in the head, should do the trick.

shhhhh
It's a [URL="http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Raw_adamantine"]spoiler.[/URL]
Oh. I didn't know the slang. Yay 1-month Dwarf!
I was planning on pumping out a lake for adamantine, but I won't now.
[editline]8th November 2011[/editline]
Also, do pumps work 1 z level above lakes? I can't figure that out.
Well, I started a nice little above ground village in some untamed wilderness. I accidentally left the game unpaused and everyone was killed by a clan of giant badgers.
I suppose I'll try again later. I mean god damn, there was blood everywhere! Worst part was all the goslings that were ripped to shreds in the goose coop.
I still don't understand WHY THERE ARE POOLS OF DWARF PUSS AROUND MY WELL
WERE DOES IT COME FROM

Dwarves wash themselves off with wells.

Deconstruct the well immediately and get some ballistas around the area.

So dwarves secrete pus like we do sweat?
jesus christ how horrifying
I usually find that my dwarves get coated in layers of blood from butchered animals and having to haul their parts around. It actually seems to be beneficial to keep your dwarves frequently dirty judging by the amount of happiness that is generated by "Taking a nice bath".
Are trolls a threat unarmed ? and can they destroy drwabridges?
They are building destroyer 2 and can learn :v:
[url]http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Troll[/url]
So they'll actively seek out constructions and buildings.
Hell yeah, just captured a dragon. Time to build a giant pit for it and dump my goblin prisoners into it. What's a good Z level fall distance that will incapacitate them but still keep most of them alive?
5 should do the trick. 1-2 for a slight stun, 15+ for certain death, and 3-14 for incapacitation.
Two or three (at least when I last played). One usually just stuns them. Three can kill in some cases. Five or more tend to maim them so badly that they just die.
[editline]9th November 2011[/editline]
Does anyone else build a glass-walled tube inside their central staircase, and drop prisoners etc through it for ~100 z-levels just for fun?
[editline]9th November 2011[/editline]
I also build a tower above the hole so I can drop them from max height.
Some enemy's wont die from 10 level drops, I make my kill traps 10+ levels and also put spike traps at the bottom.

Weight and penetration are practically the same, if you sharpen a stone and throw it at someone it has more penetration than if you sharpen a piece of a soda can and throw it at someone.
Yeah, same reason why they use depleted uranium rounds.
Post your current fort stats everybody. Lets see em.

That's one tiny military you have for a 174 dwarf fort.

I actually have 22 men in the military right now. Unfortunately most of them are recruit level because I shun danger rooms. The arena will change all that.
