[QUOTE=Naelstrom;33338223]It's been a while since I've played, but I believe you can make a burrow to encompass your "safezone" then set an alert to keep all your dwarves from doing chores outside of the burrow.[/QUOTE]
Weren't there settings like "only military allowed outside" and "Everyone inside".
Couldn't you even set with zones what is deemed as outside/inside?
is there any way to find a specific dwarf? i need to find my broker because apparently he cant access the trade depot and i dont know why

Hit u to open the unit list. Pretty sure you can find them from there.

Could also go through the hospital logs (the one with all dwarves health staus) I think.
Can't you use j to get to it, too?
is there any way to get lots of dwarves fast? i lost about half my fortress in some sieges and now i have a huge fortress but so few dwarves that doing anything takes shit loads of time,
immigrants has almost stopped coming because they are afraid of the goblin sieges too
Stop getting deaths for a while and they'll resume coming
i am getting sieges and 5 ambushes per hour so its a little hard not getting any deaths
[editline]20th November 2011[/editline]
i have 60 dwarfs and i just got sieged by 80 goblins
[editline]20th November 2011[/editline]
they also brought their only leader ngebzo slospousbu the lawgiver

It's all part of the Fun.
just trapped half their army so all their melee soldiers decided to leave the archers are still camping my entrance tho
I have little tunnels going from my castle and under the enemy siege camp locations into little turrets with ballistae in them. If the enemy sieges are too big I just blast 'em from various angles with those. I hope in the future you can designate a ballista to be manned by a member of the military. I think it's annoying that it has to be a civilian, who usually just runs away before getting to fire anything unless it's some odd setup like mine.

I build similar "pillboxes" around the map but use archers in them instead of ballistae. More efficient. They can only be accessed by tunnels from the inside of my fort so yeah they are pretty safe in there. Unless the enemy has an elite bowman, those fucks shoot right through fortifications and kill dwarves piss easily.
can ballistas shoot down z levels?
[editline]20th November 2011[/editline]
meh just gonna start a new fortress since i cant do anything with my current one because of the constant sieges
I'm trying to get back into this but i've completely forgotten everything. :(

I've given up on archers because I can't seem to find a way to force them to stand adjacent to fortifications. I want the ol' "Station exactly where I tell you to", rather than this "stand in some random spot within three tiles regardless of whether you're the only dwarf in the squad" malarkey. That and their proficiency in reloading themselves from my stockpiles could use some serious work.
can trolls destroy walls if i make a ballista tower?

Make pillboxes small enough that every tile is next to a fortification
And set the floors of the pillbox to store ammunition
And order the archers invidually instead of per-squad basis to tell every dude the exact tile to stand on

Walls are indestructible.
Is the amount of times my fort is sieged and ambushed in any way related to a civilizations 'population' in legends?
Like if I embark nearby a goblin civilization with a ton of goblins rather than a shorter amount, will my fort be attacked more?
Started to remember the flow of things, but accidentally started in an extremely snowy mountainous area (still has trees, minerals, but I don't think it'll be any good for farming or fishing) so i'm pretty sure i'll be having lots of fun soon enough.
one of my dwarves just made an artifact bone shield, is this the most useless thing ever? also can you trade with artifacts?
I just started doing my Arena Tourneys with the default ascii tileset and it's a lot more comfortable than normal.
Also it seems like this is the only tileset where awesome stuff happens; Dwarf 1 just bit Dwarf 4 in the mouth, latching on firmly and shaking it around until his throat sailed off in a bloody arc and he bled to death :v:
can ballistas shoot down z levels? or do they just dumbfire?
I've been playing that Corrosion mod, kind of a pain not being able to dig anywhere.
This game is sooo complicated. Can anyone give me a guide on how to get into this?

There are about two people who made tutorials on youtube and they are both good, so just search, you cant go wrong.
for some reason my millitary dwarves refuse to stand where i tell them even when i individually select them and tell them where to stand

It's a great shield. Very light (bone) and has artifact blocking bonuses, the material doesn't effect the effectiveness in shields.

More than two, but here's a few.
The Complete and Utter Newby Tutorial (outdated, but some of it's useful)
[url]http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/02/09/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-1-wtf/[/url]
Psisyndicate posted this on facepunch a while back, it's new and good.

Captain Duck has tutorials that are good, too. The original ones are a bit outdated, but he's got a 2 hour one for 2011 IIRC.

And the Lazy Newb Pack, a very useful tool.

There's another good one, but I can't for the life of me remember... Maybe it was Plumphelmetpunk?
Nope, it was RiotHouseLP

Ultimately, it's down to you how you learn it, but once you learn it, you'll either love or hate it.
Also, the magmawiki is insanely useful.
is it possible to enable a labour on lots of dwarves fast? like enabling furnace operating on all my dwarves
