Play adventure mode or something to keep yourself interested because that's easier to get into.
I really wanna get into dwarf fort with you guys but every time I try I just end up getting frustrated with everything and quitting, rinse repeat every few weeks I've tried following capnducks tutorial vids but yeah... The game genuinely seems awesome, and looks like lots of people having lots of fun with it, really want to get into it but just fail every time I try
Captainducks tuts are a bit old, he did a 2011 one, but that's like 3 hours long :v: Hmm, here we go.
The Complete and Utter Newby Tutorial (outdated, but some of it's useful) http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/02/09/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-1-wtf/ Psisyndicate posted this on facepunch a while back, it's new and good. http://www.youtube.com/user/PsiSyndicate#p/c/57C3E6F6FA52B85B/0/hSBqtNa-L-4 Captain Duck has tutorials that are good, too. The original ones are a bit outdated, but he's got a 2 hour one for 2011 IIRC. http://www.youtube.com/user/captnduck And the Lazy Newb Pack, a very useful tool. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=59026.0 RiotHouseLP http://www.youtube.com/user/RiotHouseLP#p/c/9C7A9E3F2FC3ED0B/0/Ql0RnMXbKso
I liked using the Complete and Utter Newby Tutorial to understand the basics, but Psisyndicate was probably one of the most useful ones that I saw. The best way to learn it is to try a lot and fail, but the wiki's really useful too. Being a sandbox, there's no "right" way to play, in that you could bring a tonne of food and 7 miners or a butcher, 6 soldiers and 100 chickens. (gotta try that :v:) Basically, a checklist for starting off is: inside food stockpiles, basic dormatory / bedrooms, wood, workshops, farms (external farms are rarely done by people, which is strange, as they can grow strawberries, which are great) and defences. It's a slog getting into the game, but once you pick up the basics, and are able to visualise the world, you'll learn rapidly. The main difficulty is in the UI and the actual graphics. The industries are easy. I taught myself the glass industry with a look at the wiki page, then I embarked on a volcano, got sand, made glass traps, and profited. Still not used pumps, ever! :v: Also, adventure mode's fun, but there's not much to do other than kill monsters and bandits and slaughter villages. I'd love to do an LP, but my house always has someone else in it, and my dad works from home.
I think that, in order to get into DF, i'll just try playing it without any actual video tutorials on how to play, just work it out for myself... edit: actually i'll probably go with psisyndicates video if following tutorial, like that it's broken up into parts, makes it easier for me to go through sections and shit tbh
What I wouldn't give for multiplayer Dwarf Fortress (2, 3 or 4 fortresses on the same embark, each managed by a player). As far as bandwidth goes, it shouldn't be impossible, however making the netcode could be a pain in the arse I imagine. Making DF 3D wouldn't be impossible either (in fact the calculations and everything would be the same, only adding graphical rendering), only problem is how the fuck do you add in animations and visual representations for everything that can happen in the game.
so you guys have heard of "towns" right? pretty much the reason why I want to get into dwarf fortress.

On DF you can fit 1000 dragons in a single square, as long as 999 are lying down, but 2 standing dwarfs? Nope. Also, the scaling - dwarves can put a mountain of shields in a bin, but 2 goblets can't be in the same place, unless they're in a bin. Oh well, I'd still really like to see 3d, if it was possible. There's actually a thing that let's multiple people oversee at the same time, but I think that only one can take control, and it's basically a livestream. Still cool, but I'd love a proper multiplayer fortress, with multiple players able to have a fortress each on an embark. Would probably have no pausing, but y'know.
If there's ever a 3D DF, I imagine it looking exactly like Dungeon Keeper 2.
Is there any way to increase breeding rate for a race? Seems the Orcs (or Skaven for that matter) in the Warhammer mod reproduce way too slowly for what they are. the phoebus tileset or w/e is really quite nice. I had a fortress going, but the dwarves wouldn't build any buildings I placed, except for construction work shop... gonna try starting from scratch on a new world, didn't quite like my location anyway
Is there any way to increase breeding rate for a race? Oh yeah, for the buildings, you need masons for mason shop and stone walls, carpenter for wood walls and shop e.t.c.
Is it the [Multiple_Birth_Frequent] tag or something?
Is it the [Multiple_Birth_Frequent] tag or something? Gonna try that though. [editline]10th December 2011[/editline] Maybe it's not in the raws, I'd imagine that if it was possible to set it, the creators of the WH mod would already have done it themselves.
so you guys have heard of "towns" right? pretty much the reason why I want to get into dwarf fortress.
Poor captain duck, he's so typically dutch.
Is there a working link to a starter tutorial? The one in the OP is broken and I'm interested in playing this.
IM me on steam, assmuncher.
Word of advice for anyone playing the WH mod: Apparently it's bugged and a juggernaut of Khorne will show up very soon (1 year for me). Needless to say a beast made of materials as strong as steel arriving at year 2 is very difficult to deal with. Anyone got any idea how to deal with it? I'll have to edit some files probably (4th time in a row I loose my fortress to one, not this time).

OR to do without cheating, collapse shit on it? [editline]10th December 2011[/editline] Also am I the only one who hopes that one day DF will have monsters that are multi-tile? So in the future say a dragon would be like a bunch of tiles arranged in the shape of a dragon? Hell the tiles could even move. Getting stomped by a dragon would be like being caught in a collapse. That'd make shit so much more interesting when dealing with large monsters.
Change it to like chalk, or talcite, or something. OR to do without cheating, collapse shit on it?
I'm in no position to collapse anything sadly, I haven't even moved away from my starting wagon (also due to being a bit overambitious with the main hall, but I didn't expect a megabeast so soon). Anyway the situation solved itself, I have a large pillar rising from the ground that has some holes and leads underground (no idea what it is, it has a name too, never seen that shit before). The juggernaut ran down the tunnels and I haven't seen him since (he's probably fucking shit up in some cavern, chances of him returning to the surface are slim).
I wish I could understand Fortress mode, I can only barely play adventure mode properly :( LCS on the other hand is easy to get on with.

If they have litters, it should dramatically increase population in the worldgen, though. As for that megabeast, a cavein will kill anything, but I honestly don't know how else to do it. I mean, you don't have access to magma that early, either. You could also try dropping him a Z level (a dodge-me trap or whatever they're called would work - a 1 wide trap and marksdwarf lined passage that they dodge the traps on) that drops him into a cage trap, as if they fall into a trap, it should activate even if he has trapavoid, I think. (not sure if it does bypass trap avoid)

I changed it to be made of gypsum, yet it still killed the 2 giant war eagles I brought with me for protection. [editline]10th December 2011[/editline] I don't mind absurdly hard beasts, but at least let me build the fortress before sending it.
I know what you mean. I don't mind terrifying biomes and the like, but just give me a season first, ok? Suddenly, Khorne's Avatar out of fuckin' nowhere.
Since Gypsum was apparently too hard, I changed it to be amde of blood, removed all it's attacks (so it can only push) and put all it's fighting skills to 0. 2 dead war eagles in 10 seconds. [editline]10th December 2011[/editline] Oh god I used DFhack to set it on fire and now it's a berserking beast of fire, black smoke and blood that is setting fire to everything. Trapped it in obsidian then spawned lava on it, finally slaying the demon. Jesus Christ this was with all skills to 0, changed it's material to blood and removed all it's attacks. What the fuck would that thing do un-altered? Better set up a cave in quickly, cheated this one because it's pretty much a bug, but not going to with the next one.

What should I do right now? This is my second mood and the first was fey. Nevermind, he used two mudstone slabs to make an artifact mug.
Well, my fort on the coast failed. Started running out of food, a couple people got killed by wild animals, basically just turned into a tantrum spiral.
keep fucking hitting dampstone... it's annoying, how do I avoid it?
i hate analysis paralysis when designing my fort goddamnit i just kinda gave up and made cell circle based rooms
Well I got re-started on a new fort. This time I decided to try out the challenge of not changing any migrants' jobs, just having them do whatever they showed up as. In some ways it works well, because I just happened to get a shearer, a spinner, a weaver, and two clothiers. So my fort can have a little wool industry. But it's a pain when I get a high master gem setter and no gem cutter. Also I learned today that dwarves with legendary skill can actually show up to your fort, and what do I get? A legendary potash maker.
Also I learned today that dwarves with legendary skill can actually show up to your fort, and what do I get? A legendary potash maker.
And he shall produce great quantities of well-made potash.
keep fucking hitting dampstone... it's annoying, how do I avoid it?
Embark on a map without aquifers. Or just keep digging.
