SSAO is by definition a very rough approximation of certain indirect illumination effects. Actually simulating multiple bounce lighting would mean rewriting almost the entire renderer.

It's SSAO, SSIL, and it takes Hemi Skylighting into account, which takes into account ambience from the hemi lighting and determines the visibility of the SSAO. See here for a comparison.

This is a rough approximation of how you would expect nvidia to calculate ssao. It's essentially a mask that is calculated by proximity between concave surfaces. With regards to roxa's post because it only darkens concave areas, it does not take the lighting values into account. With ENB the shader recalculates the lighting (you can configure the falloff and value in the .ini file), and it uses that to approximate the values for illuminating the screen space effect. Obviously there's no way of finding out exactly how it's being done because boris did not make it open source, but that's the best we have to go on anyway.
Anyway I've been tweaking for another version of my config, I fixed the oversaturated blue tones in the sky and fog, and the yellows have a more realistic value. Basically everything looks a lot better. I'll post screenshots when I'm finished with it.
