For an engine that's 7 years old Source still holds up, even if you discount newer branches of it (like Orangebox and L4D)
HL2 is still pretty good looking, but those pictures were a bad example. Also the engine is 8 year old, I doubt they finished the engine in 2004.
The engine is much older, they started working on it probably even before 2001.
